About the Opportunity

The University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications Innovation News Center seeks a Technical Media Producer to be directly involved in the production of daily news products. The position, similar to a technical director position in the broadcast industry, will oversee technical production of live and pre-recorded programs, including but not limited to news, sports and weather. The content will be distributed on media platforms including WUFT-TV/FM, WRUF-TV/FM, WUFT.org, WRUF.com, FPREN, all station social media accounts and mobile apps. Production might be led in both in studio and remote settings.

This role is integral is achieving the INC’s dual mission of preparing UF College of Journalism and Communications students for the workforce through instructional coursework and immersion experiences while serving the greater Gainesville community.

Key Duties

  • Lead production of news content:
    • Direct live and pre-recorded content/programs with manual, semi-automated or fully automated news productions from the WUFT/INC news content control room.
    • Delivers a consistent, repeatable error-free news production process utilizing the Ross Overdrive APC and teaches and mentors students in the effective use of APC to enhance news products across all platforms.
    • Drives the use of APC in all modes of operation to enhance video elements of news content for various WUFT and WRUF media platforms.
    • Create graphics
    • Assist in coordinating production crew members
    • Technical direct (TD) daily news products and manager studio
    • Assist in coordinating production crew schedules to cover day parts and newscasts
    • Ensure live capabilities are ready for air
    • Accompany field crews to set up live shots as needed.
    • Participate in breaking news coverage that impacts the community, public safety and emergency communication programming and efforts related to the Florida Public Radio Emergency Network (FPREN) or any other content as directed by the Director of the INC or Executive Director of the Division of Media Properties.
  • Mentor students:
    • Teach and mentor students in applied learning environments within the Innovation News Center and Division of Media Properties.
    • Critique students involved in the production of programs/content and multimedia products by offering constructive feedback
    • Provide training in the operation of various pieces of newsroom, studio, control room and remote production equipment, and production procedures.
  • Bring Innovation to the team:
    • Identify and incorporate new technologies and formats for production and distribution.
    • Participate in professional development through vendor training, conferences and self-guided learning technical skills are up to date.
  • Contributing to the CJC mission:
    • Serve on committees or provide assistance for other college events.
    • Fill-in for other team members when necessary, if applicable, to sustain operations.
    • Work effectively and appropriately with a wide range of stakeholders.

Expected Salary:

$50,000 – $55,000

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree and two years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as a technical director for a live newscast utilizing production automation
  • Experience with the following ROSS products: Overdrive, Carbonite, XPression, Streamline/Tria
  • Remote broadcasting experience
    • Experience with LiveU is a plus
  • Experience working with, teaching or mentoring high school and/or college students
