Under direct supervision of the Technical Specialist II (Inclusion Lead) and lead supervision of the Recreation Coordinator with support from the Recreation Supervisor, the Inclusion Program Aide is a key role in the City’s new Inclusion Program (Inclusive Pomona). The Inclusion Program Aide supports the implementation of positive and culturally appropriate behavioral support plans and strategies that support the inclusion of youth with intellectual & developmental disabilities (I/DD) in Pomona’s programs & activities. The Inclusion Aide is responsible for supporting the programmatic, contractual, grant, City goals and deadlines while responding to community needs.
The Community Services Division has four position available, which are classified as at-will, hourly / part-time positions with no benefits provided. Hourly / part-time positions average 20 hours per week and less than 1,000 hours in a twelve (12) month period.
Assignment will be based on the City’s needs as well as candidate skills and work experience.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS TO APPLY

In addition, you will need any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
Education & Experience
- High school graduate or GED equivalency required.
- Special education, child or youth development background
- 1 year experience in the field of inclusion and/or working with individuals with intellectual & developmental disabilities, preferably in after school / youth development programs or youth recreation is highly desired.
- 1 year of paid or volunteer experience working directly with youth highly desired.
- Experience with behavior support, modifications, and accommodations for children with disabilities and/or challenging behaviors across settings, especially within an out-of-school environment highly desired.
- Experience providing inclusive programs to children highly desired.
- Understanding of inclusion, and ability to translate the understanding to a variety of audiences (children, parents, staff) highly desired.
- Principles, practice, and techniques specific to inclusion activities highly desired.
- Knowledge of best practices in risk management as related to inclusion programs and recreation facilities highly desired.
- Understanding of recreation theories and their application to individual and group behavior; ability to inspire confidence and enthusiasm; to blend with various groups; and to maintain effective relationships with associates, participants, and the public highly desired.
- Knowledge of leadership principles and approaches to varied types of inclusion activities including the ability to organize groups for participation in diversified inclusion programs is highly desired.
- Knowledge of curriculum development and effective teaching methods in the inclusion field highly desired.
- Experience in working with ethnic and culturally diverse communities is highly desired.
- Ability to speak Spanish is preferred.
- Basic knowledge of age-appropriate classroom and behavior management skills is highly desirable.
License or Certificates
- Must possess and maintain a valid California Class “C” driver’s license and have a good driving record.
- A credential or certification in special education, child or youth development preferred.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Assist in the implementation of inclusion programs in city programs and facilities as well as supporting activities outlined in the Inclusive Pomona Grant.
- Support City staff in providing behavior support, modifications, and accommodations for children with disabilities and/or challenging behaviors
- Support with the implementation of key inclusion principles and practices to variety of audiences (children, parents, staff)
- Apply recreation theories to individual and group behavior; inspire confidence and enthusiasm among various groups; and maintain effective relationships with associates, participants, and the public.
- Support with organized groups for participation in diversified inclusion programs
- Provide constant participant supervision
- Act as a liaison between staff, community members, collaborative partners and other city personnel.
- Support with ensuring programmatic, contractual, grant, and City goals and deadlines are met.
- Act as a resource to program in curriculum development, participant recruitment, retention and assessing programmatic needs.
- Attend and actively participate in meetings and training sessions that directly affect the development, planning, coordination and implementation of Inclusive Pomona Project.
- Support the collaborative development and fostering of new programs and best practices throughout City of Pomona programs and activities.
- Meet deadlines while maintaining high quality of work.
- Utilize best practices in risk management as related to inclusion programs and recreation facilities; ensure established emergency and safety procedures are followed at all times.
- Follow safety protocols.
- Accurately document all incidents/accidents and ensure proper communication to all parties as appropriate.
- Communicate in a positive and effective manner with all participants, City officials, parents/guardians, community members, co-workers, volunteers and guests.
- Maintain professional demeanor at all times to ensure the City’s image and mission statement are upheld.
- Interact and foster a positive relationship with student to ensure that the student feels welcomed in the program.
- Provide academic support by working with student through homework help or supplemental learning activities.
- Demonstrate leadership and a commitment to educating and empowering youth to reach their full potential.
Skill to:
- Operate modern office equipment and Microsoft software particularly Word and Excel.
- Implement inclusion related activities.
- Operate a motor vehicle safely.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: Ability to work in a standard office environment and outdoors in city parks; ability to travel to different sites and locations.
SELECTION PROCESS
Work Hours
Work hours will be approximately 10-20 hours per week. Some weekends and evening shifts may be required.
