Description
To construct, prepare and/or operate scenery, audio, projections and/or lighting for the production of various theatrical performances; to train students in the methods of stagecraft, including scenic construction, rigging, stage lighting and audio for performances; and to ensure adherence to established safety procedures in both the shop and stage areas.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general supervision from an assigned supervisor.
Responsibilities and Duties
1. Construct, prepare and operate scenery, audio, projections and/or lighting for the production of various theatrical performances; utilize various building materials including wood, cloth and steel; paint scenery, back drops and various other stage props.
2. Direct the work of students to construct and install scenery for various performances and oversee the safe operation of technical operations, including use of various hand and power tools, building materials and chemicals.
3. Order, receive, store, inventory and repair tools, lighting equipment, lumber, hardware supplies, paints and other required materials for the creation of stage scenery and production of performances.
4. Attend technical and dress rehearsals as needed and take notes on placement of scenery and props; gather props or scenery needed for rehearsal purposes; modify scenery as needed to comply with production specifications.
5. Transfer scenery and props from shop area to stage for productions; set up and rig scenery, audio, projection and/or lighting equipment; oversee the disassembly and storage of scenery, audio, projection and/or lighting equipment when production is complete.
6. Maintain production facilities in a safe, clean and organized working condition; ensure adherence to applicable safety rules and regulations.
7. Maintain and update a variety of detailed records and logs of production inventory and supplies, and maintenance records for compliance with OSHA rules and regulations.
8. Provide support to stage crews during special events and performances.
9. Under the direction of faculty, supervise student stage crews both in the shop and on/backstage;
10. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
• Current industry standard methods and techniques of scenic construction, installation, and alteration.
• Techniques/best practices of stage and arena rigging.
• Metalworking and structural welding.
• Stage lighting standards and practices.
• Live sound reinforcement equipment and techniques.
• Concepts of technical theater design.
• Characteristics of various building materials and paints.
• Principles and applications of scenic carpentry and construction.
• Operational characteristics of various hand and power tools.
• Occupational hazards and standard safety procedures.
• Basic aspects of theatrical performances.
• Principles and procedures of record keeping.
• Pertinent Federal, State and local codes, laws and regulations.
Ability to:
• Read and understand floorplans, color renderings, light plots, and construction drawings in both printed and digital format.
• Create technical drawings, construction schedules and cut lists in digital format.
• Construct, install and alter scenery for various theatrical productions.
• Safely rig scenery, audio, projection and/or lighting equipment.
• Safely operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools.
• Effectively weld a variety of metal forms.
• Ensure adherence to applicable rules and regulations.
• Work with students in the creation of stage scenery and props.
• Recommend modifications to scenery and props for specific productions.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
• Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds, and disabilities of community college students and staff as demonstrated by skills and abilities in cultural responsiveness and cultural humility.
• Lift and carry up to 50 lbs. frequently; frequent bending, stooping, and climbing; use of hand and power tools; stand for long periods of time, work in confined spaces, work on ladders and at heights.
Education and Experience and Training Requirements
Education:
Associates Degree in Technical Theater or related discipline, Bachelor’s Degree preferred.
Experience:
Two (2) years of demonstrable experience in:
• Construction, installation and operation of stage scenery;
• Participation in workplace health and safety planning and plan implementation;
• Rigging in multiple settings;
• Supervision of stage crews both in the shop and on/backstage;
• Installation and operation of stage lighting systems;
• Installation and operation of stage audio systems;
• Use of manlifts, scaffolding and/or tall ladders and associated safety equipment.
