Under the general supervision of a Police Captain, receives incoming emergency and non-emergency calls from the public requesting information in a multi-jurisdictional environment. Contacts the appropriate agency/agencies and dispatches medical, police and fire personnel appropriately. Must be capable of performing job functions independently and in conjunction with other dispatchers and must be able to calmly deal with emergency situations and dispassionately and logically communicate with the public, some of whom are under extreme distress.

- Hears and quickly comprehends various radio and telephone communications and establish their priority.
- Reads and comprehends TTY, computer, and verbal communication.
- Must become certified and/or licensed and maintain such certification and/or licensing in the use of Ohio LEADS, Federal N.C.I.C, Emergency Medical Dispatch and any future required licensing or certification as required by the City, State of Ohio or the Federal Government.
- Speaks clearly, enunciates words and communicates messages and information logically and intelligently.
- Accurately enters data into a computer from police and fire radio transmissions.
- Handles emergency situations calmly and patiently.
- Possesses the temperament and good judgment to effectively deal with the public, including those who may be irate, unreasonable, ill, scared or confused.
- Possesses awareness of cultural diversity in the community and department.
- Operates communication equipment for an entire workday.
- Maintains confidentiality about information learned on the job.
- Accurately and legibly prepares handwritten records.
- Maintains after-hour communication for service departments within the multi-jurisdictional communications district.
Typical Qualifications
Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age, a citizen of the United States or lawfully permitted to work in the United States, and possess a high school diploma or GED. Prior experience as a Dispatcher is preferred.
Must not have been convicted of, pleaded guilty to, entered a plea of nolo contendere to, or received judicial diversion for any felony charges or to any violation of any federal or state laws or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, or controlled substances. Must not have been convicted of, pleaded guilty to, entered a plea of nolo contendere to, or received judicial diversion for any misdemeanor charges involving DUI/DWI or alcohol, or use, possession, manufacture, or sale of controlled substances or drug paraphernalia within the past five (5) years. Must agree to have fingerprints on file Ohio LEADS.
Each employee hired by the City after January 1, 2005 must refrain from using all tobacco products for the duration of employment with the City of Cuyahoga Falls.
Supplemental Information
Must possess a valid State of Ohio’s driver’s license.
Must possess some knowledge of city layout and have skill at typing/keyboarding (35 wpm with one error);
Ability to hear and speak clearly and intelligently, in order to logically communicate with others over the telephone, radio, telecommunication device for the deaf (TTY), and computer; ability to work varied shifts with varying days off; ability to concentrate and accomplish tasks despite interruptions; ability to develop and maintain positive, harmonious, cooperative and productive working relationships with others, in a close, confined work environment; ability to perform a variety of tasks simultaneously and in rapid succession; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and posted schedules in English; ability to perform job functions independently and in conjunction with other dispatchers; ability to calmly deal with emergency situations and dispassionately and logically communicate with the public, some of whom are under extreme distress; ability to comprehend and speak a language in addition to English is preferred.
The starting hourly rate for this position will depend on previous Telecommunications Dispatcher experience.
