Department Description Department Purpose
Located on the campus of one of the great research universities in the nation, the Mondavi Center is the premier performing arts venue in the Sacramento region. Each year, it presents speakers and artists from around the world and the nation, including leading musicians in classical music, jazz, world and roots music; modern dance, cirque and theater arts. Job Summary
Under general supervision of the Theater Production Supervisor, responsible for supervising up to 25 student technicians, 12 scene technicians, 7 career staff technicians, 2 student assistants and all arts, lecture and special events taking place at the Mondavi Center’s venues. Assist with designing and implementing training programs that ensure a safe, professional backstage environment for Mondavi Center (MC) constituents. Assist with the research, purchase, and inspection of safety-related equipment and systems. Assist with the research, composition, and implementation of safety policies. Act as the electronic scheduling software administrator and oversee the overall scheduling of MC career staff, scene technicians, and student technicians for shows and events. Review billing details entered into the electronic billing management system. Provide and model excellent customer service and maintain a positive working environment and high safety standards, attention to detail, organization, and efficiency.
The Assistant Production Manager’s scope of responsibility includes assisting with safety, training, event billing, hiring, and technical details and logistics for all arts, lectures, and special events at the Mondavi Center’s venues. The Mondavi Center hosts widely varied performing arts and lecture-performances, including modern and traditional dance, jazz, classical and American heritage music; traditional and musical theatre; and distinguished speakers. In addition to 100+ annual Mondavi Center Presents performances, the facility hosts UC Davis Department of Music performances and UC Davis Department of Theatre and Dance performances. Also hosted are political events, campus “public face” events such as graduations, and numerous private events.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
• Repetitive lifting and carrying a minimum of 65 lbs., utilizing safe lifting and moving techniques.
• Work regularly requiring walking, bending and climbing; approximately 50% of performance facility is reachable only by stairs or ladder.
• Work on ladders, personnel lifts, catwalks, loading bridges, and theatrical grids up to 100′ above the stage floor.
• Work during events, performances, and rehearsals may require standing for long periods.
• Ability to identify visual and auditory difficulties occurring during events/productions.
• Ascend and descend narrow ladders (some in excess of 70 feet) between floors backstage.
• Some work may be completed in low light areas and/or areas of restricted access.
• May operate electrical, sound, or rigging equipment or a counterweight system.
• Position occasionally requires work in areas where hazardous materials (e.g. spray paint or cleansers) are present.
WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Work a flexible schedule and overtime including evenings, weekends and holidays in support of the Mondavi Center’s event schedule and to accommodate production schedule.
• Must be available in emergencies to resolve or assist with the resolution of technical difficulties on behalf of the Mondavi Center.
• Work in high pressure situations with tight deadlines.
• Restricted vacation during peak periods.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in theater production, stage management, or a related field with experience in all aspects of stage operations including: lighting, electrics, sound, rigging, fly rail, stage and house repair and maintenance.
- Supervisory experience including recruitment, selection, training, coaching, correcting, and evaluating employees.
- Experience using Vectorworks or AutoCAD software, electronic personnel scheduling software, and electronic scheduling/event/billing software.
- Skills to work with a diverse group of constituents from diverse cultural backgrounds, perspectives, and levels of theatre production experience, including university and community clients, professional touring artists and their staffs, agents, performers, administrative staff, technical crews, and students.
- Interpersonal and communication skills to effectively and professionally communicate both orally and in writing; skill to elicit the information needed to clarify inquiries and requests and resolve sensitive or difficult situations diplomatically.
- Organizational and time management skills to manage the multiple details and tasks associated with theatre roadhouse logistics and operations.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience in a professional or educational performing arts center or theatrical performing center in a supervisory role.
• Experience producing and/or presenting at least three of the following types of events: theater, dance, musicals, opera, concerts, films, and lectures.
• Experience working with various users, including regional, national, or internationally-known artists to community renters.
• Knowledge of performing artists, lecturers, art forms and terminology from varied cultures and time periods sufficient to understand staging and presentation requirements.
• Knowledge of current state and federal OSHA standards applicable to professional theatre environments.
