The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Prince George’s County Department of Parks and Recreation is seeking a Therapeutic Recreation Specialist II toprovide programmatic and supervisory support to the Special Programs Division and Therapeutic Recreation programs for the northern region of Prince George’s County. The position is based out of the division office in Greenbelt, Maryland.

This position is responsible for the planning, implementation and supervision of programs for individuals with disabilities who reside in Prince George’s County, with a focus on Therapeutic Recreation Kids’ Care after school programs for ages 6 to 21, with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This position will assist with summer camps, evening classes, some weekend programs and departmental events and staff trainings.

Maximum salary is $75,229 with growth potential to $87,419.00. (Commensurate with education, experience and other MNCPPC eligibility criteria).

Examples of Important Duties

  1. Responsible for the assessment of participants’ complex needs, provision of accommodations to facilitate program participation. Develops, coordinates, implements and evaluates programs for individuals with disabilities to meet assessed community needs.
  2. Recruitments, selects, trains and supervises program staff, including the coordination of work schedules, counseling of work performance and completion of annual evaluations. Meets on a regular basis with supervisor on program progress. Assists with coordination of staff training programs. Verifies that staff follow safety procedures and resolves problems or complaints.
  3. Coordinates internally and externally, acting as a liaison and/or resource to departmental personnel. Performs community outreach, and maintains working relationships with community groups, advocacy organizations, departmental vendors and partnerships.
  4. Implements public relations component of programs and provides ongoing support to program participants, families, and staff through regular program visits, personal contacts and correspondence. Creates informative and engaging monthly program and special event announcements, calendars and flyers for distribution to contacts on marketing mailing lists.
  5. Manages an inventory of equipment and supplies and tracks expenditures within an approved budget. Assists with the financial management (budget projections, purchase tracking, and cost recovery) of programs under supervision.
  6. Ensures safety of participants, staff, and volunteers at all times. Develops and maintains a written emergency plan. Maintains current medical information on all program participants. Maintains CJIS Fingerprinting and First Aid CPR certification.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Bachelor’s degree or four years of progressively responsible experience in therapeutic recreation or related field (e.g., special education, vocational rehab, etc.) and two years full-time professional experience; or

2. An equivalent combination of education and experience.

3. Valid Maryland driver’s license, or the ability to acquire one.

Supplemental Information

Preferred qualifications:

  • Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) desired but not required.
  • Experience in event planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of community-based therapeutic recreation programs.

Working conditions:

Works in an office and at program sites in the community. Maintains a flexible schedule with occasional long hours; evening and weekend hours seasonally to supervise programs, classes and special events, or to provide staff trainings. On call during program hours and responds to emergency situations; some driving required. Programs are located throughout Prince George’s County and position is responsible for regular program site visits. Works with individuals with various disabilities (i.e. cognitive, social/emotional, physical, and/or sensory).

Eligibility

  • Two (2) times base salary; maximum benefit is $200,000 for each
