Therapeutic Recreation Assistant (Part-Time, without benefits working less than 19 hours per week)

Summary
Therapeutic Recreation Specialist performs difficult professional work in conducting a variety of programs and activities in an activity center or similar facility for people with intellectual disabilities; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Program & Facilities Manager. Supervision is exercised over volunteers in the Special Olympics Iredell County program and other programs for people with intellectual disabilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Coordinates the Special Olympics Iredell County (SOIC) program.
- Develops other programming for people with intellectual disabilities.
- Ensures that all citizens with intellectual disabilities within the geographic area have the opportunity to participate in the local SOIC program.
- Recruits and supervises volunteer personnel for SOIC sports, competitions, and other programs and special events.
- Ensures volunteers are properly trained; submits volunteer screening information to Special Olympics North Carolina.
- Recruits and oversees volunteer committee members of SOIC.
- Schedules facilities as needed for sports, competitions, and other programs and events; enforces rules and regulations and maintains order and discipline.
- Supports mission statement and goals and ensures compliance with policies and procedures of Special Olympics Incorporated and Special Olympics North Carolina.
- Connecting community resources to fund opportunities for local athletes.
- Maintaining proper records and ensures that all paperwork is submitted in a timely manner to Special Olympics North Carolina.
- Manages fundraising efforts and pooled banking system for SOIC.
- Completes annual Accreditation and Value – In Kind reports for SOIC.
- Drives activity van for programs.
Minimum Education and/or Experience
- High School Diploma or GED
- 3 years’ experience with a nonprofit organization or sports organization preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- General knowledge of the principles, rules, materials, and equipment requirements of a variety of recreation and Special Olympics activities.
- General knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of public recreation, psychology, and sociology and of personal health and hygiene.
- General knowledge of first aid practices and techniques.
- Ability to adhere to program standards and objectives outlined by superiors, and to lead and instruct groups in games, sports, and other recreational activities.
- Ability to resolve disputes with firmness and impartiality.
- Ability to meet and deal tactfully with the public.
- Ability to communicate openly and in a timely manner.
Requirements
- Possession of a valid N.C. driver’s license.
Special requirements
- New coordinator orientation provided by Special Olympics North Carolina with 12 months of hire date.
- Annual leadership conference within 12 months of hire date.
Job Related Physical Requirements
This position involves work requiring the employee to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and less force frequently to move objects. Physical activity related to this position may include the use of fingers and hands, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Sufficient visual acuity is required to prepare and analyze data and figures; do accounting, transcription, and extensive reading; use measurement devices and a computer terminal.
Working Conditions
An employee in this position will be exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions including noise. An employee in this position could be “reasonably anticipated” as a result of performing their job duties to face contact with blood and other potentially infectious materials.
