JOB TITLE: MiCLSD Literacy Coordinator

REPORTS TO: Director of Literacy & Curriculum: MiCLSD Project

LOCATION: Elementary and Middle School

JOB SUMMARY:

The MiCLSD Literacy Coach will provide instructional support and coaching to teachers as they work to ensure that each student is able to reach his or her academic potential and works under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Literacy and Curriculum. The Literacy Instructional Coaches’ primary role is to work with teachers to support best practices in using data, provide analysis of school-wide trends in instruction, and make recommendations about potential next steps to address areas of need. As an advisor to teachers and the leadership team, the Literacy Instructional Coach is responsible for four main areas: a) observing instructional delivery and providing feedback to enhance and support the development of each teacher’s content area b) supporting teachers in the design of units and lessons for the development of their year-long curriculum, c) analyzing data in order to modify curriculum and forms of assessment to meet students’ needs, and d) working with the academic staff (grade level chairs, assistant principals, principals) in the school to support sharing of best practices. The Literacy Instructional Coach must take a hands-on approach to improving instruction and effectiveness by working at various levels (classroom-, school-, system-wide) to directly improve ELA instruction, student learning and foster teacher development. This may include modeling lessons in classrooms, helping teacher groups plan instruction, creating system-wide policies and procedures, and facilitating professional development. Finally, the Literacy Coaches must be willing to implement all aspects of the MiCLSD grant.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Valid and Current Michigan Teaching Credential
  • Minimum of 3 years teaching experience
  • Proven ability to work with others in a positive and supportive manner

PREFERRED QUALIFACTIONS:

  • Master’s in Education, Reading Endorsement or Reading Specialist Certificate.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works under the supervision of the BHAS MiCLSD Assistant Director
  • Works closely with the other MiCLSD Literacy Coach(es) and Early Childhood Coordinator, teachers, administrators and the district’s Instructional Facilitator Team to strategically implement the Michigan Comprehensive Literacy State Development Grant.
  • Plays an integral role in the efforts to horizontally and vertically align literacy curriculum and oversee ELA progress monitoring throughout the schools
  • Works collaboratively with the school personnel to advise administrators and teachers on developing instructional strategies and intervention programs for struggling students.
  • Collaborates with the district’s Instructional Facilitator Team to plan and deliver pre-service summer professional development for new and returning staff members aligned to high priority initiatives and outcomes in the area of literacy.
  • Supports the development of high-quality/effective ELA instruction in the assigned school; observe and coach developing ELA teachers to improve instructional planning, teaching practice, and the use of data, assessment, and instructional technology.
  • Works with administrators and teachers to refine and develop common standards based pacing plans, mid-year, and end of year common assessments for each grade level.
  • Works with various teams (administrators, teachers, IFs) to facilitate analysis of data provided by diagnostics, common assessments, and formative assessments.
  • Works with Central Administration, IFs, and school administrators to develop policies and school structures that facilitate the improvement of ELA instruction and the appropriate interventions and supports for students.
  • Supports and delivers guidance on literacy using evidence-based techniques
  • Responsible for implementing all aspects of the MiCLSD Grant as they relate to the position

Terms of Employment:

$62,350 – $70,950

Salary based on education and experience pursuant to the Benton Harbor Area School Board policies and collective bargaining agreement, if applicable

Funding Source:

This position is funded through the Michigan Comprehensive Literacy State Development Grant. As a grant funded position, funds must be verified each year for continued funding.

Performance of this job will be evaluated by the Director of Literacy & Curriculum.
