Overview

Missouri Baptist Medical Center, an acute care hospital in St. Louis County, offers a full continuum of medical and surgical services, including heart care, cancer, women and infants, breast health, gastrointestinal, orthopedic, stroke, therapy, wound and pain management services. The hospital has a 24-hour adult emergency department and cares for pediatric patients at a separate emergency department in collaboration with St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

The Risk Management Department tracks and promotes quality of patient care, and patient and visitor safety, in collaboration with quality and performance improvement activities. The goal of the department is to minimize the frequency and severity of adverse events, manage any adverse events to prevent further injury and financial loss, and advance awareness in order to identify risk related issues and possible trends. of Risk Management include incident reporting, management of patient and family complaints related to quality of care, educational activities, and compliance with The Joint Commission standards as well as federal, state and local laws and regulations. All members of the team are proactive as well as reactive in terms of providing support and suggestions for risk reduction, by way of such activities as root cause analysis and creating appropriate action plans.

Role Purpose

Manages medical center patient safety program to oversee all performance improvement / transformation initiatives in response to patient safety events. Has oversight responsibility for clinical regulatory compliance, patient advocacy, and risk management and is accountable for the strategic development implementation and oversight of these programs.-Also ensures appropriate communication and information exchange with all levels of the organization, to BJC Legal and Risk Management as well as external resources, defense council and agencies to accomplish risk management goals and program initiatives.-Translates patient safety ideas, strategies and research into actionable plans and integrates these plans into hospital operations. Provides leadership and takes initiative to protect the assets of the hospital by managing risk through loss prevention, loss control, risk transfer, claims management, patient complaints, and patient safety.

Responsibilities

  • Manages individual(s) including but not limited to: onboarding and hiring, training, workload management & performance evaluations, conducting professional development plans as needed. Ensures that the productivity and actions of that group meet/support the overall operational goals of the department as established by department leadership.
  • Develops and adheres to departmental staffing, revenue and/or expense budgets. Responds to changes in the business which may affect the ability to achieve the budget goals.
  • Provides direct line leadership to the program staff whose responsibilities are to support excellence and improvement initiatives, patient safety, and clinical regulatory compliance and risk management initiatives.
  • Facilitates Loss Prevention by providing education to internal and external customers, and acting as a resource for handling risk related issues.
  • Provides loss control by managing the Claims Process to resolution, initiating reviews and resolution of critical incidents, directing the internal litigation process, and overseeing activities of external attorneys.
  • Provides input in the planning, implementing and maintaining of a quality patient care delivery system and hospital wide safety programs.
  • Reviews and evaluates processes that are affected by medical safety and regulatory issues. Identifies problems, makes recommendations for improvement, and monitors compliance.
