DEPARTMENT: Traffic Engineering
HOURS OF WORK: Monday through Friday; 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Example of Duties
Under general supervision, assist with field installation, monitoring, retrieval, and maintenance of traffic data collection systems and computer databases. Work in and around heavy traffic during extended periods of time in various weather conditions. Perform traffic studies including vehicle counts, stop-and-delay studies, gap studies, radar checks, and pedestrian zone evaluations. Compile and edit data. File and maintain records. Investigate requests for traffic information. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and successful completion of at least three (3) courses in any combination of geometry, drafting, surveying (Geomatics) or Right of Way (ROW).
Note: For verification of successful completion of at least three (3) courses in any combination of geometry, drafting, surveying (Geomatics) or Right of Way (ROW), applicants MUST attach school transcript(s) to the application to participate in the recruitment process. OR
High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and 18 months experience in one or more of the following fields: drafting, surveying, inspection, materials testing, plan review, permitting, computerized mapping, computer assisted design (CAD), traffic signal control, code enforcement, customer service representative, and/or a related field.
Must possess a valid State of Alaska driver’s license at time of hire.
Satisfactory Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) background check within 6 months of hire.
Preferences:
- Knowledge of basic engineering practices, terminology, computer skills, and equipment appropriate to the Engineering Technician I position.
- Ability to perform routine technical, GIS, computer, and engineering duties as required.
- Ability to work under adverse weather conditions and communicate effectively with others.
- Work Zone Traffic Safety certification either IMSA, ATTSA or equivalent.

Preference will be given to current Anchorage Municipal Employees Association (AMEA) employees. AMEA employees who are successful in the screening process will be forwarded to the Department for consideration prior to any non-AMEA applicants.
