Summary
Under the general supervision of the Transportation Planning Manager, the Traffic Technician coordinates the work flow of private development projects through the Traffic Engineering Division and prepares agreements and ordinances for adoption by City Council. Creates maps and graphics; maintains and retrieves information from Traffic Engineering databases. Collects field data and conducts traffic studies for warranting traffic control devices and other transportation related issues. Reviews and processes traffic control plans for right-of-way permits. Responds to citizen calls regarding traffic related items.

Essential Job Functions & Other Important Duties

  • Assists with the organization of daily engineering assignments and duties for Traffic Engineers and Traffic Signal Technicians.
  • Collects field data (photos, measurements, sketches, traffic counts) used to create maps, engineering plans, work orders, presentation materials and graphics.
  • Reviews and processes traffic control plans for right-of-way permits.
  • Maintains, updates, and retrieves information from crash database and traffic count database.
  • Programs and places traffic counters, operates handheld radar speed gun.
  • Provides permit approval information to developers, contractors and City departments.
  • Maintains, updates, and retrieves information from engineering department database.
  • Reviews information entered by Planning, Building Inspection, Public Works, and Engineering divisions.
  • Responds to requests for assistance and information from walk-in and telephone inquiries.

Other Important Duties:

  • Prepares engineering ordinances for adoption by City Council.
  • Coordinates work flow of development projects with other City departments.
  • Travels to construction sites, meetings, conferences and training.
  • Some extended shifts/hours are required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

  • Knowledge of traffic engineering and construction inspection techniques and procedures.
  • Knowledge of database software.
  • Knowledge of AutoCad and/or Microstation.
  • Knowledge of customer service practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of computers and related equipment, hardware and software.
  • Knowledge of City policies and procedures.
  • Skill in effective oral and written communications.
  • Skill in reviewing crash reports and analyzing crash data.
  • Skill in resolving customer complaints and concerns.

Preferred Education, Experience, and Certifications:

  • Associate Degree or two years of college in an engineering or science related discipline and one year of related work experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • IMSA Signal Technician I Certification or ability to obtain within 12 months of date of hire.
  • IMSA Work Zone Safety Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months of date of hire (TEEX Work Zone Certification will be considered).
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screening, physical agility exam, criminal background check and MVR check.
  • Must possess a valid State of Texas Driver’s License.

Work Environment:

  • Work performed is primarily light work, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force to move objects.

Equipment and Tools Utilized:

  • Equipment utilized includes personal computer, copier, calculator, fax machine, other standard office equipment, video tape players, traffic counters, radar speed guns, and department vehicles.
