Trail Data Coordinator

The Division of Environment and Planning aims to protect, restore, and expand New York City’s green spaces and natural areas to maximize their benefits for environmental and community health and resilience. The Natural Resources Group within Environment and Planning manages over 10,000 acres of natural areas across the five boroughs, including forests, grasslands, and wetlands, and has secured tens of millions of dollars of grant from state, federal and private sources over the past decades to fund the restoration and management across these ecosystems.

Major Responsibilities
• Under general direction with some latitude for independent initiative and judgment, support trail formalization and improvement objectives using spatial and non-spatial database management systems.
• Conduct data analyses using various tools to deliver accurate and timely information.
• Provide data management, mapping, and analytical support as needed.
• Participate in trail data collection and verification through field visits and desktop review.
• Ensure a high degree of data quality and accuracy by executing Quality Assurance/Quality Control procedures and reports.
• Coordinate with relevant stakeholders, including Park managers, to communicate trail data via visualizations such as maps and dashboards.
• Manage, standardize, and update datasets.
• Assist with deploying and managing mobile devices used by field staff.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1” or “2” above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in “1” above.

Preferred Skills

1. A degree with major study in geography, geographic information systems, environmental sciences, ecology, forestry, computer science and other related disciplines such as horticulture, landscape architecture or city planning.
2. Strong demonstrated computer, data management and analytical skills.
3. Experience using ESRI’s ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online and Field Maps app, and working with relational databases.
4. Proven experience using the Microsoft Suite, including Excel and SharePoint.
5. Strong demonstrated proficiency writing SQL queries and querying databases.
6. Using SQL Server Reporting Services to create, deploy and maintain reports to support operations and management needs.
7. Excellent communication, presentation, and organizational skills.
8. Ability to work effectively as part of a team as well as independently.
