Job Purpose:
Under limited supervision, plans develops, conducts, and coordinates staff development and training programs for agency staff with special emphasis on the Division of Security and Operations, including the Juvenile Detention Center. Assists in training other direct care staff in the agency as needed or required. Assists in conducting needs assessments and serving as part of the training team for Training and Certification.

Job Duties:Plans, develops, schedules, and conducts training-related programs based on the identified needs to include, but not limited to, setting of programs and instructional objectives, the designing of curriculum, the development of lesson plans and learning packages, and the identification, selection and/or creation of learning aids. Conducts and/or facilitates training groups and individual programs specifically based on the needs of staff.

Conducts formal and informal training evaluations to ensure compliance with various standards; quality of instructional content and delivery methodology; Implements and recommends program improvements. Assists in coordinating and implementing all training and related functions for DJJ Detention and training staff as it relates to CJA, including registrations, training, separations, and other related activities.

Conducts training and staff development needs assessments by collecting information and data related to the training of employees responsible for providing services to juveniles within the secure facilities setting, including correctional officers, juvenile specialists, social workers, psychologists, and other direct care staff.

Performs other related duties as directed by division or agency needs.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State Requirements:

A bachelor’s degree and relevant program experience.

Additional Requirements:

Successful completion of Detention Basic training at the SC Criminal Justice Academy and DJJ’s Training of Trainers within nine months of hire and other applicable certifications as required.

Requires knowledge of applicable training principles and practices.

Knowledge of methods and techniques of conducting formal and informal training sessions.

Ability to conduct conferences, lead discussion groups, stimulate participants in the learning process.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Ability to analyze training / development needs and resources as well as communicate solutions effectively utilizing critical thinking.

Knowledge of juvenile justice system required.

Must be able to work with other training team members effectively.

Works closely with the training division managers to plan, deliver, and coordinate all training for assigned areas.

Works effectively under general supervision, having scheduled performance reviews (EPMS) in accordance with agency policy and other training quality assurance checks

This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of juveniles within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. The employee may have direct and indirect contact with juveniles within the jurisdiction of the Department of Juvenile Justice. Training applicable to these duties will be provided

Preferred Qualifications
Preferred:
A bachelor’s degree and five years of experience, including conducting training for corrections, law enforcement, or military personnel.
