Primary Responsibilities

The primary duty of the Transportation Business Group (TBG) Sustainability & Resiliency Director will be refining and overseeing the implementation of a transportation market-sector focused sustainability and resiliency plan within the TBG. This position reports to the Vice President – Director, Transport Advisory Services. The selected individual will work in close partnership with HDR’s Enterprise-Wide Sustainability & Resiliency Cross Sector Director, and partner sustainability and resiliency business group Directors to coordinate activities that are tied to cross-business group sustainability and resiliency goals that have been identified by HDR’s Executive Management team. This includes, for example, implementation of the key focus areas – resiliency, climate, health & wellness, decarbonization, and the support of sustainable and resilient design and rating programs in Transportation.

The TBG Sustainability and Resiliency Director will work to define a TBG sustainability and resiliency plan that identifies market sectors’ priorities regarding raising HDR’s technical excellence in sustainability and resiliency; addresses methods to raise the company’s market penetration in this area; and identifies key project opportunities. The Director will work with market sector leaders, Transportation technical staff and clients to integrate sustainable and resilient solutions for our clients and projects. The Director will also be expected to regularly talk to clients about sustainability and resiliency and the value that solutions bring to projects. In turn, the Director will serve as the project or task manager on select projects and will maintain a utilization target to add to their resume and credibility as a sustainability and resiliency leader.

More specific duties include:

  • Project and Program Support Responsibilities – This position will serve as a technical focal point for the TBG to deliver sustainability and resiliency services to our clients and to create alliances within the Transportation Business Group. This position will work closely with other technical Business Class Directors, Regional Transportation Directors, Market Sector Directors and Client Managers to ensure the technical resources and tools are available to fulfill long-term growth goals while maintaining high quality deliverables. Additionally, other duties include technical support, quality oversight, program audits, recruiting and staff development, best practice development, project leadership, and principal-level program/project management.
  • Marketing and Business Development – As a cross sector service, the Director will support other Market Sector Directors in developing and implementing their strategic visions to support sustainability and resiliency initiatives. Further, this cross sector will develop its own strategic and tactical plans to address market opportunities and help to drive the business into geographies and service areas that are most appropriate to strengthen our overall program. Additional duties include supporting internal and external client relationships and select major pursuit support. This position also supports select project capture planning efforts, pre-proposal discussions and/or meetings, and proposal preparation and coordination with technical and marketing staff, presentations and negotiations when appropriate.

Required Qualifications

This position requires the following skills, attributes and experience:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Science related discipline, planning or economics. Other certifications such as Envision, Greenroads, INVEST (experience) and/or LEED accreditation(s) are preferred but not required. A reasonable timeframe to achieve the certifications will be discussed during the position performance review discussion.
  • A Master’s degree in Business Administration or similar is a plus.
  • 10 year’s experience with practical sustainability and/or resiliency program application experience and industry leadership highly preferred.
  • An understanding of HDR’s Business Classes, Cross Sectors, Market Sectors and Business Groups is required.
  • Experienced in development and management of a wide range of client relationships and specific program and/or project pursuits.
  • Experienced with industry associations and maintaining a visible profile in the transportation markets.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with client managers, technical directors, business group directors and operations staff.

Typical starting pay range for this position:
• California will be $188,958 – $319,020 annually/hourly depending upon skills, experience, education and geographical location.
• Washington will be $197,547 – $282,210 annually/hourly depending upon skills, experience, education and geographical location.
• New York will be $214,725 – $306,750 annually/hourly depending upon skills, experience, education and geographical location.
• Colorado will be $188,958- $269,910 annually/hourly depending upon skills, experience, education and geographical location.
