Position Title: Dispatcher
Department/ Section: Transportation
Supervisor: Director of Transportation
Hourly Rate: $20.00 – $20.75/hour (depending on experience).
Pay Grade: 71
Schedule: Up to 40 hours/week; Benefits offered based on hours (30 hours/week), Arizona State Retirement Sytem based on hours (20 hours/week)
Summary of Function
Under general supervision, establishes and coordinates the assignment, scheduling and routing of all transportation vehicles; maintains a variety of department records; performs a wide variety of specialized and analytical duties related to the safe and efficient operation of a comprehensive school bus operation.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma Required; Associate’s degree preferred
- Two years of school bus transportation or dispatch experience preferred
- Must possess a valid First Aid/CPR within 90 days of hire
- Valid Arizona Department of Public Safety IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card within 30 days of hire
Duties and responsibilities
- Responds to technical questions regarding bus and driver availability, trip systems, emergency response, and work prioritization in conjunction with the Operations Manager.
- Provides dispatch solutions, tracking functions, scenario applications, data generation and route details.
- Assists the Routing Supervisor in route configurations, providing them data related to challenges within existing routes.
- Works to effectively collaborate within own dispatch team and with all transportation areas, programs and schools in the support and accomplishment of the district mission.
- Works to create an atmosphere for drivers that instills confidence and support.
- Ensures that transportation services are kept on schedule through and with the assistance of other dispatchers.
- Evaluating and monitoring drivers while enroute and appropriately report concerns to the Operations Manager.
- Assists in maintaining department readiness for inclement weather, collision, emergency response plans, cyclical workloads, attendance patterns, and alternative school schedules as it pertains to daily, weekly and yearly dispatch needs.
- Responsible for the verification of information and data for daily and long-term coverage of routes and buses.
- Assist Routing Supervisor in providing drivers with the most current route, student information, schedules, maps, and directions.
- In collaboration with the Operations Manager, ensures effective utilization of standby/substitute drivers.
- In collaboration with the Operations Manager, scheduling and assigning school bus service for athletic, field, and other custom trips.
- May be required to drive when appropriate.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Working conditions
Indoor and outdoor environment. Manages all job duties with the mobility, agility, dexterity, and focused observation it takes to meet standards of performance. Moderate environmental conditions and noise levels. Prolonged periods of standing. Exposure to fumes and gases. Must be able to handle stressful situations calmly and with consideration of other persons.
Physical requirements
Work involves the performance of duties where physical exertion and movement is required to perform aspects of the job. Requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, push, or pull heavy objects and materials. Assistance is available as required to perform physically demanding tasks. Work involves standing and moving for extended periods of time, requires moving from one location to another, reaching, bending, stooping, crawling, turning, holding and grasping objects. Verbal communication ability required.
Equipment, Aids, Tools and Materials
Uses office equipment which includes but is not limited to: computers, video projectors, white boards, and office or instructional equipment. FUSD recognizes that ever changing development of technology but expects all staff to keep abreast of changing technology opportunities and use tools and devices provided to them. Uses vehicle transportation which includes but is not limited to: buses, vans, trucks and other motor vehicles. Uses tools commonly found in a bus shop and maintenance department.
