Summary Statement
Boise Parks and Recreation maintains more than 90 developed parks across the city, approximately 210 miles of Ridge to Rivers trails in the Boise Foothills, 25 miles of the Boise River Greenbelt pathway, and thousands of acres of open space.
Turf Rehabilitation Specialist:
- Performs technical turf rehabilitation techniques for natural and sports turf grass within the Parks and Right-Of-Ways, along with their associated irrigation and pumping systems.
- Utilizes Integrated Pest Management (IPM) processes to ensure proper care and maintenance of healthy soils and plant life at facilities.
- Operates a wide variety of equipment related to the repair, rehabilitation, and maintenance of turf.
- Performs all duties under general supervision and direction.
Essential Functions
Performs adjustments or replacements of sprinklers. Assists in making renovations to improve pressurized irrigation system performance. Ensures proper settings and configuration of irrigation system controllers to meet plant demands and scheduled use of facilities.
Performs grounds maintenance, soil testing, and pesticide application to areas managed and maintained by the City. Utilizes mowers, aerators, over seeders, fertilizer spreaders, dethatchers, top dressers, sod cutters, tractors, and pesticide application equipment to ensure parks are properly maintained. Applies fertilizers, seed, and lays sod where required. Aerates, top dresses, and dethatches where required. Inspects landscapes, plantings, and turf for pests or indications of poor plant or soil health, recommends and makes treatments utilizing hand or large scale application equipment. Performs snow removal and de-icing during winter months utilizing shovels, chemicals, tractors, loaders, plows, and related tools. Operates a variety of equipment including hand and power tools, turf maintenance and rehabilitation equipment, and heavy equipment such as backhoes, dump trucks, drum rollers and trenchers as necessary to complete assign tasks.
Records inventory of chemicals and supplies used to complete assigned tasks. Creates and maintains a detailed chemical log that includes which chemicals have been applied, the location, and date of application. Attends classes and training sessions offered through the City to gain and maintain certifications. Calibrates spray and spreading equipment. Uses topographical data in determining locations for selective top dressing. Uses printed or electronic blueprints, schematics, and maps to locate irrigation lines, and boundaries, to plan for duties in the field, and provide responses to 3rd party facility locate requests.

Requirements
Required Knowledge, Experience, And Training
- Two years’ experience landscaping, park turf rehabilitation and maintenance, or similar agricultural experience.
- Working knowledge of pesticide application and related equipment; pest management techniques; turf grasses rehabilitation techniques and equipment; equipment such as tractors, trucks, air compressors, mowers, blowers, and hand; power tools such as drills, saws and their related safety standards.
- Ability to perform essential functions outdoors in all weather conditions and on a 24/7 basis; safely operate all equipment and tools required; properly use all safety equipment provided and required; identify and prioritize additional tasks while in the field; identify when additional help is needed; perform duties in and around traffic, cars, pedestrians, and bikes throughout the City; answer citizen inquiries and/or direct to appropriate personnel for questions and concerns; display an attitude of cooperation and work harmoniously with all levels of City employees, the general public and other organizations; communicate effectively in the English language at a level necessary for efficient job performance; complete assignments in a timely fashion; understand and comply with all rules, policies and regulations; maintain prompt and regular attendance; and perform all essential and marginal functions as assigned by an authorized employee, supervisor and/or manager with or without a reasonable accommodation.
- Individuals must be capable of operating vehicles safely and have an acceptable driving record.
Preferred Knowledge, Experience, And Training
- Three years’ experience working in turf rehabilitation, or related turf maintenance field. Working knowledge operating equipment including tractors, mowers, over seeders, sod cutters, backhoes, top dressers, fertilizer spreaders, and turf spray equipment.
- Possession of a valid Idaho Professional Applicators license.
Licensing And Other Requirements
- Valid Idaho driver’s license.
- Ability to obtain an Idaho Professional Applicators license within six months of employment.
