DESCRIPTION
The Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science is dedicated to creating and promoting public health innovations to advance equity, justice, and wellbeing for all and has more than 80 primary salaried faculty, 20 secondary faculty, 250+ personnel, 225 postgraduate students, and over 650 undergraduate majors. The School includes activities in the public health disciplines of biostatistics and bioinformatics, epidemiology, global health, health policy, health behavior, health equity, public mental health, environmental and climate health, and preventive medicine.
The School has strong collaborative research programs facilitated by Research Centers of Excellence focused on wireless and population health systems, health promotion and equity, women’s health, and tobacco control, and has extensive collaborations with the School of Medicine, Jacobs School of Engineering, the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Moores Cancer Center, Design Lab, Qualcomm Institute, ACTRI, HDSI, Skaggs School of Pharmacy, and with other partners across the UC San Diego campus. Partnerships with the community and health agencies are fundamental to the School.
The School houses five recharge cores providing services to UC San Diego and external customers. Research in the School includes ~$125M total awarded grants and contracts. The School has and administers two PhD programs (public health and biostatistics), a Master of Public Health professional degree program, an MS in Biostatistics, the only Health Sciences undergraduate program (BSPH), a Master of Applied Science in Leadership of Healthcare Organizations run in conjunction with UC San Diego Extension, and a Preventive Medicine Residency program.
The UCSD PROS Skills Coach will deliver the UCSD PROS Soft Skills Curriculum to individuals whose lives have been impacted by or at risk of contact with the criminal justice system, including those whose lives have intersected with the criminal justice system and/or are unstably sheltered, living with disability, mental illness, or HIV or recent victims of violence. Specifically, clients for this program include persons ages 18+ who have a history of incarceration, probation, or parole. Immediate family members of eligible persons (i.e., spouse/partner, child age 18+) will also be eligible to receive support from the UCSD PROS Skills Coach. UCSD PROS clients may also have other concerns that impact their needs (e.g., living with chronic conditions such as HIV, substance use, mental health, or disability) and Coaches should be familiar with and comfortable in working with community members that have these needs. In addition, Coaches should be comfortable in working with and liaising with clinical programs (e.g., hospitals or clinics) that may refer eligible persons to the UCSD PROS program; staff may need to conduct an initial meet-and-greet in clinical settings to schedule first appointments
In addition to providing client-facing services, the Skills Coach will report to the Program Director, Program Lead, and work in a team setting with a Career Coach to support clients. Skills Coaches will also participate in intake and other data collection to evaluate client progress toward goals, and weekly team meetings to ensure program fidelity.
Skills Coaches are expected to have expertise in CBT, narrative and multi-systemic therapies, de-escalation techniques, motivational interviewing, goal setting, mandatory reporting, mental health first aid, identification of suicidal and homicidal ideation, and principles of team-based care while also serving as mentors and role models to clients who are seeking to improve their soft skills and reduce the possibility of violence in the community. Skills Coaches will also assist clients with goal setting, executive functioning such as time management and problem-solving- serving as a role model and mentor in skills that will help clients succeed in their interpersonal relationships, with employers and in educational settings, and to achieve their personal goals with the goal of reducing violence.
UCSD PROS Skills Coaches may need to provide clients with referrals to community-based organizations on an as needed basis to ensure that basic needs or other resources may be accessed.
Coaches will be expected to conduct community outreach to engage eligible persons into the program and to work with previously identified community partners or new organizations to accept incoming referrals of eligible persons.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Masters in Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or a psychological degree with an emphasis on the needs of persons whose lives have intersected with the criminal justice system and/or are unstably sheltered, living with disability, mental illness, or HIV or recent victims of violence.
- Knowledge of community-based mental health and social services, including basic needs to support client progress.
- Demonstrated ability to form constructive working relationships with medically and mentally ill patients who are justice-system impacted.
- Strong organizational and time management skills and ability to conduct outreach and engagement with community organizations to identify potential clients.
- Knowledge and skill in problem-focused psychotherapeutic approaches. (EG- Cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, goal setting, problem-solving, executive functioning, narrative therapy, others)
- Working knowledge of DSM-IV categories and differential diagnosis.
- Excellent communication skills and able to communicate effectively and mentor and serve as a role model to persons whose lives have intersected with the criminal justice system and/or are unstably sheltered, living with disability, mental illness, or HIV or recent victims of violence.
- Proven ability to provide a range of psychotherapeutic services including individual, couples, family and group psychotherapy and who will receive a structured UCSD PROS coaching curriculum.
- Demonstrated ability to use electronic medical record or case management system (ie IntakeQ) to document services provided and client progress.
- Demonstrated knowledge of violence prevention techniques and familiarity of the social determinants of health affecting those whose lives have intersected with the criminal justice system and/or are unstably sheltered, living with disability, mental illness, or HIV or recent victims of violence.
- Prior work history with adults impacted by the criminal justice system (e.g., on probation, parole, formerly incarcerated). Prior experience working with adults whose lives have intersected with the criminal justice system and/or are unstably sheltered, living with disability, mental illness, or HIV or recent victims of violence.
- Prior work history with adults impacted by violence, including gang members.
- Demonstrated ability to conduct outreach to community organizations whose clients may benefit from UCSD PROS services.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Ability to plan and conduct treatment interventions for psychiatric illness.
- Familiarity with Southeast San Diego, Central San Diego, and South Bay.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
- Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
- Prior experience providing tele-health services.
- Intern license.

Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $71,000 – $160,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $34.00 – $76.63
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
