Utilities Electrician I

The Utility Electrician I will be responsible for installing, operating, troubleshooting, maintaining and repairing utility low, medium, and high voltage electrical generation and distribution systems.

This position is located on the Ohio State University in Columbus, OH and will report to the High Voltage Supervisor.

What you’ll do:

  • Perform repairs, replacements, troubleshooting, and installation of electrical systems and equipment up to 600V class
  • Assist with and performs preventive maintenance and upgrades of electrical utilities equipmentI
  • Inspect work, perform lockout/tagout; use test equipment to remedy and prevent problems
  • Overhaul motors and replace bearings
  • Operate cranes, lifts and other equipment
  • Check and maintain equipment operating systems to include air dryers, air compressor systems, chillers, substation battery banks, annunciator panels; 3-phase motors and circuit protective relays
  • Read and update blueprints, electrical diagrams, manuals, and schematics; make sketches, modification plans and layouts, design circuits and read wiring diagrams; customize equipment needed to perform tasks; maintain records and reports
  • Assist higher level Utility Electricians with the installation, inspection, troubleshooting, and repair of 5,000 to 138,000 volt class electrical distribution equipment; provide support to distribution switching
  • Direct contractors in the installation of permanent and temporary power sources; inspect and monitor contractor work and new electrical construction; provide technical and safety training to contractors and other staff
  • Perform other duties as assigned

What you bring:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience required
  • A minimum five (5) years’ experience as a commercial/ industrial electrician, including 4 years’ experience in installation and maintenance of 600V class electrical systems
  • 15kV experience preferred but not required
  • Knowledge of basic principles of electricity and related terminology; ability to read technical manuals, schematic wiring diagrams and volt-ohm-amp testers

Additional Information/Conditions:

  • Must possess a valid U.S. state issued driver’s license and clear driving record
  • Ability to meet highest attendance requirements
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both written and verbally with skills in report writing and correspondence
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to use company computer

  • Salary Range: $46,835-$107,510, annually
  • Actual salary offered may vary depending on geography, experience, education, internal pay alignment, or other bona fide factors
