Utilities Maintenance Welder

The City of North Las Vegas announces a posting to create an eligibility list and to fill one (1) vacancy for the classification of Utilities Maintenance Welder. The current vacancy is in the Utilities Department. The eligibility list will be utilized to fill the vacancy for this classification, for up to one hundred twenty (120) days.

NOTE TO CURRENT EMPLOYEES: Pursuant to the Teamsters collective bargaining agreement, non-probationary employees successfully completing the qualification assessment process will be placed on an eligibility list to be used to fill vacancies in this classification for up to one hundred and twenty (120) days.

  • Pay – The starting hourly pay for this position is $28.05 (step 1). All new employees hired for this position will start at step 1 of the range. Existing employees will receive increases as outlined by their bargaining agreement.
  • Work Schedule – Schedule will be 4 days per week, 9 hours per day. Monday – Thursday 6:00am – 3:30pm.
  • Environment – While performing the essential functions of this job the employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions, work near moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, or vibration. The worker may be in narrow aisles, passageways and crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, small, enclosed rooms, small sewage and water line pipes, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia. Working conditions are typically moderately quiet, but may be loud for limited durations while working with power tools, equipment, or machinery following all prescribed safety rules and regulations. Will be required to wear personal protective equipment.Regular and timely attendance is required.

THE ROLE
Performs skilled and difficult combination welding tasks in the maintenance, repair, modification and fabrication of equipment, tools, and machinery for the Utilities water distribution system and wastewater treatment facilities. Assists in routine to journey level installation, repair, maintenance, cleaning and remodeling of pumping, control, processing and related systems and repairs and tests equipment. MINIMMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in welding, pipe fitting, or satisfactory completion of a two- year community college welding program; and two or more years of progressively responsible skilled experience in in the welding or fabrication trade. Equivalency: A high school diploma or GED and any combination of education, training and experience which produces the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for the job and related to the essential functions of the position.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Must possess a valid state driver’s license and maintain satisfactory motor vehicle record and ability to obtain appropriate Nevada state driver’s license at time of hire; specified positions may require possession of a Class B license.
  • Possession of an appropriate forklift certification within six months (6) months from the date of hire.
  • Must possess and maintain a State of Nevada Water Distribution Operator Certificate Grade I within eighteen (18) months from time of hire, transfer, promotion, or reclassification.
  • Other certification requirements may apply for specific appointments. Reciprocity for equivalent certifications from other states may be considered.
  • Completion of OSHA 10 Construction within 15 days from date of hire.

SELECTION PROCESS

  1. Oral Board (Weight 100%, Passing Score 70%)

Note: Subsequent vacancies during the life of the eligibility list may require participation in an additional selection interview. The selection interview will be weighted 100%, requiring a passing score of 70% in order to be considered for the subsequent position vacancy.
