JOB TITLE: Vehicle Technical Mechanic (Diesel)

JOB GOAL: To provide mechanical repairs to all School District vehicles and equipment in a clean and safe environment and to maintain an excellent working relationship with all District staff.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent
  • ASE Certification required
  • Proficiency in computer applications, writing skills, applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes and regulations
  • Must have, or be able to obtain, a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake endorsement
  • Must be able to pass a fingerprint and background clearance, obtain IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
  • Must have an excellent attendance record
  • Mechanical experience necessary in diesel and gasoline engines and hydraulic and air brake systems
  • Experience in vehicle air conditioning systems preferred

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities shall include, but not be limited to, the following:

  1. Provide all aspects of mechanical repair services for all District vehicles
  2. Safeguard all tools, parts, supplies, vigilance of occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices.
  3. Performs diagnostic testing and identifies vehicle faults for all fleet vehicles including school buses and white fleet in its entirety.
  4. Performs preventative maintenance and repair requirements.
  5. Performs minor and major engine disassembly and reassembly work; replaces failing vehicle components; complies with applicable regulations, rules and District policy standards.
  6. Identifies most critical maintenance needs, maintains maintenance records and activity reports.
  7. Performs vehicle road testing to determine diagnostic evaluation, as well as safety of maintenance and repair work.
  8. May be assigned to respond to Road Calls depending on the need.
  9. Complete inspection sheets and discuss with the Director all accidents, vehicle damage, and student injury as a result of district vehicle or equipment.
  10. Willing to work split shifts, if necessary, as determined by the Director of Transportation and Fleet Manager.
  11. Attend mandatory department meetings.
  12. Utilize communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interactions with coworkers, supervisors, the general public, and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to review work direction.
  13. Perform other duties as assigned by the Fleet Manager and/or his/her designee.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Requires climbing, balancing stooping, kneeling, crawling, standing, walking, lifting, repetitive motions.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors; frequent exposure to hazardous physical conditions; frequent exposure to atmospheric conditions; occasional exposure to hazardous materials; moderate exposure to environmental conditions such as extreme weather and temperatures.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12-Months, 261 Days, General Leave, Vacation
COMPENSATION: $24.95 – $29.44
BENEFITS: As per District policy
REPORTS TO: Transportation Director
EVALUATION: Initial evaluation to be completed no later than ninety (90) days after first day of work; thereafter, annually by supervisor.
HOURS: 40 hours per week
CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt
