Vet Tech Supervisor: Surgery Ward, Night Ward & Neurology

Job Summary:

Join us as a Veterinary Technician Supervisor, overseeing the general surgery and orthopedic receiving, night ward, and neurology service areas of the small animal hospital. a) Manages staff schedules, approves time off-requests, and conducts employee performance reviews.
b) Works across multiple services to facilitate exceptional patient care.
c) Develops knowledge and responsibility in areas of specialization to include maintenance of special equipment, instructing others in use and care, assisting clinician and students in procedures.
d) Anticipates needs of clinicians, staff and students during procedures and in patient care.
e) Assists in the instruction of professional veterinary students and training of entry level nursing staff as requested.
f) Contributes to and participates in team building by assisting in problem solving activities.
g) Participates in hospital leadership meetings and activities.
Responsibilities: Supervises and executes technical work within a specified animal care unit, and/or develops and enforces procedures and protocols, and manages personnel to ensure attainment of organization goals.

  • 20% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 10% Schedules logistics and secures resources to ensure adequate staffing, equipment, and supplies to ensure optimal operation of a designated animal care unit
  • 10% Prepares, completes, and documents technical animal care procedures, assessments, and medication administration according to established care plans and medical necessity
  • 10% Develops animal care procedures, protocols, and affiliated reference materials to ensure compliance with established rules and regulations
  • 40% Provides nursing animal care for patients and works alongside other veterinary technicians in the unit
  • 5% Provide guidance and leadership to staff in areas of oversight
  • 5% Contribute to the instructional needs of the teaching hospital for all learners

Tasks:

  • Provide primary leadership and management direction for Veterinary Technicians, Assistants and student employees in your area of responsibility.
  • Monitor infectious disease trends in the hospital, follow appropriate isolation and disinfection practices in the hospital and inform and train staff and students for the same.
  • Assists and participate in the instruction and educational experiences for veterinary students, clinical trainees and pre-vet students.
  • Ensure staff, students and resident clinicians are dispensing drugs and controlled substance in accordance with UWVC Pharmacy regulations.
  • Assist with inventory, and record keeping activities for controlled substances in your area of responsibility to ensure state and federal regulatory compliance.
  • Ensures appropriate charge capture for the services provided to the patients.
  • Ensures equipment is maintained appropriately and serve as the point of contact for vendor relations and clinicians for any equipment related issues.
  • Responsible for participating in other duties as needed or assigned.
  • Oversight of the establishment of work assignments among the technicians to ensure that daily patient care and teaching needs are taken care of efficiently and effectively and that scheduled cases are seen promptly.
  • Maintain a broad knowledge of common small animal medical diseases and therapies relevant to the clinical services supervised, including pre- and post-operative monitoring and nursing care.
  • Assist with onboarding and orientation for 4th year students, new staff and trainees
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate policies, procedures and standards of performance regarding different aspects of patient care.
  • Also monitors compliance with these policies, procedures and standards. Provides effective feedback to appropriate individuals regarding breeches of compliance.
  • Responsible for ensuring staffing is maintained in all areas of responsibility to ensure patient care, client care and operational needs are met.

Qualifications:
A minimum of 5 years’ experience as a veterinary technician in a clinical or hospital setting. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills desired to work effectively with team members in a collegial and professional manner. Strategic and innovative thinking desired and encouraged. Previous supervisory experience preferred but not required

Requires the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. independently and physical and manual dexterity to perform specialized technical tasks.
License/Certification:
Required
CVT – Certified Veterinary Technician
or, for candidates licensed outside Wisconsin, must be able to obtain WI licensure within 12 months from date of employment

Preferred
VTS – Veterinary Tech Specialist
Work Schedule:
Hours generally Monday-Friday, 8AM-5PM, with 1 hour lunch, may vary based on hospital and candidate needs.

Flexibility to cover various shifts as needed. Some holidays and weekends may be required, based on needs of the hospital. On-call hours as required by the hospital.
