Job Description:

The University of Florida Small Animal Hospital is now hiring for a Veterinary Assistant. The veterinary assistant works with veterinarians and technicians to provide patient care in the Small Animal Hospital. This position works under the immediate direction of a supervisor or manager as well as supportive oversight from veterinarians and technicians. Job duties include but not limited to walking patients, administering medications, preparing patients for discharge, and ensuring accuracy of medical records. This individual will work closely with patients and hospital staff and must be able to develop friendly, professional relationships and maintain a positive attitude throughout all interactions. The assistant will be responsible for the cleanliness and organization of the service areas as well as providing basic patient care and husbandry under the direction of technicians and doctors. A person in this position must possess excellent communication skills and be proactive in determining the needs of the hospital.
Examples of duties include but not limited to:
• Ensuring cages and runs including drains, grates, and doors are cleaned daily and as needed
• Assisting with processing laundry as needed
• Disinfecting and cleaning equipment regularly
• Walking and feeding patients
• Animal restraint for exams, catheter placements, bandage changes, anesthesia, etc
• Assist with patient intake and discharge
• Able to handle animals safely to help with procedures or for transport to another location throughout the hospital
• Able to obtain vitals such as TPR and record appropriately in medical record
• Safely administer oral, aural, and ophthalmic medications
• Ensure patient is clean prior to leaving hospital
• Collect all patient medications (prescription and personal) and personal items to hand off to owner
• Audit record to ensure all charges are accurate and accounted for
• Confirm with service that discharges are completed and owner has been communicated with by a doctor
• Ensure any follow up appointments have been scheduled
• Provide discharge instructions to owner

Schedule would be Monday – Friday 9:30am – 6:30pm, with a one hour lunch break. Schedule may be adjusted to accommodate hospital needs.

Expected Salary:

$15-$16/hr

Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in Veterinary Medicine
Certified Veterinary Assistant
