Position Overview
The Veterinary Healthcare Technician located within the Animal Services Department assists the veterinarian with providing medical care for all animals housed within the animal shelter, or out in the field as required.
Examples of Duties
- Performs physical examination of animals, administer vaccines, performs house diagnostic testing and interpret results, prepare and administer medications to animals.
- Monitor and evaluate overall health of general animal population, identify and address ill animals in accordance with established guidelines, coordinates with veterinarian as needed
- Perform euthanasia by injection, maintain all applicable records including DEA controlled substance records
- Assist veterinarian with sterilization surgeries, including calculating drug dosages, administering and monitoring anesthesia, responding to anesthetic emergencies and preforming pre and post-surgical procedures
- Clean and maintain surgical instruments, equipment and surgical suite
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited two-year college or technical school with a degree in Veterinary Medical Technology and one (1) year of experience as a veterinary assistant or related field; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Must obtain both the certification to administer euthanasia by injection and certification as a rabies vaccinator within one year of hire date.
Management Preference: Registered Veterinary Technician in the State of NC.
Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver’s license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire.
Negative drug screen and background check are required

- Knowledge in modern office practices and procedures, animal disease management/recognition and general animal care
- Knowledge of vaccination requirements and proper techniques, animal shelter policies and procedures, ability to perform physical exams and identify and address medical problems/diseases
- Ability and knowledge to perform specific treatments/procedures (i.e. wound closure/repair and fluid replacement)
- Ability to perform specific diagnostic testing
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Ability to deal constructively and tactfully with the public and to maintain composure in stressful situations
