Job Description:

The Veterinary Technician Manager is responsible for the supervision, training, and scheduling of the nursing staff for the progressive care ward and South Kennel plus ensuring equipment is maintained and area stays within budget. The PCW manager is a key person in regards to hospital infection control and oversees the isolation area. The Manager will be responsible for creating an environment of patient-focused care, defining standards for quality patient care, managing and developing work-based teams, ensuring staff receive proper training and providing leadership to our nursing team. The person acts a working manager, covering staff when needed to ensure adequate coverage. They will work closely with the ECC manager and hospital director. This position requires advanced knowledge of veterinary nursing care and techniques. This position requires a post offer health assessment.

Examples of positions include but not limited to
• Responsible for recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees
• Communicate effectively with the service chiefs and faculty regarding expectations of nursing staff to make them aware of issues or concerns
• Ensure staff meet and maintain minimum standards for technical knowledge and patient care through regular training, assessments, and continuing education
• Develop supervisors’ and shift leads leadership skills
• Develop short- and long-term goals for staff
o Establish work priorities: schedule staff to ensure adequate coverage while minimizing downtime and overtime, and maintain an efficient workflow
o Assess current workflows and schedules and determine where staff are needed
o Meet with direct reports on a regular basis for a 1:1 meeting to discuss their growth, development, and needs
o Conduct performance reviews, motivate team members and create strategies to boost productivity and efficiency while maintaining high quality patient care, positive work environment, and an emphasis on the core teaching mission
o Validate and approve employee time
o Determine and suggest changes in protocols or procedures to prevent patient quality safety issues
o Create, maintain, and participate in schedule for technicians, ensuring all shifts are covered including after hour emergency on call schedule
• Develop, implement, and maintain standardized training program for staff
• Create a teaching environment that promotes further education and development of staff and students in a safe and welcoming environment
• Ensure continual delivery of high quality nursing care
• Adopt and implement innovative nursing practices to improve our facility
• Serving on the infection control committee
• Monitoring Isolation usage and ensuring area is stocked appropriately
• Training new staff on protocols

Expected Salary:

$30-$34/hr, salary dependent on credentials and experience

Preferred Qualifications:

1. Credentialed Veterinary Technician
2. Good communication skills [verbally (telephone and person-to-person) and literacy skills (ability to read and compose grammatically correct sentences) are critical to success on this position]
3. Knowledge of animal care and nursing
4. Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and terminology
5. Excellent customer service skills
6. Ability to effectively supervise and communicate employees of various different levels and responsibilities
7. Knowledge of the equipment and materials used and their availability and applications.
8. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with clinicians, coworkers, students, and clients
9. Ability to effectively maintain a working environment while in stressful situations.
10. Possess and exhibit maturity and high level of integrity
11. Maintain a positive attitude at work
12. Willingly accept constructive criticism
13. Good computer skills
14. Ability to plan, organize and coordinate
