About the Department

The Media & Public Relations Department proactively develop relationships with media outlets and influencers to drive consistent press coverage and exposure around NYRR’s events, free youth programs and community initiatives, as well as establishing the organization and its executives as industry leaders. The Broadcast & Video Production function oversees NYRR’s live television broadcasts, including the TCS New York City Marathon and United Airlines NYC Half, and manages the organization’s video and audio content creation with a focus on developing compelling and entertaining content around existing events, programs, and initiatives to raise awareness, drive engagement, and attract monetization opportunities for the organization.

About the Position

NYRR is seeking a dynamic, media, content, and public relations executive to build and lead the overall strategy across Broadcast, Media and Public Relations. The Vice President, Media & Public Relations is responsible for management of industry leading professionals in these verticals.

Bringing superior media and public relations acumen and inspirational leadership, the ideal candidate for this role is passionate about developing strategy to raise awareness and drive engagement for the organization and will have a track record of running communication activities across Broadcast and Media.

Reporting directly to the CEO, the Vice President, Media & Public Relations will be a member of the senior leadership team and will deliver organizational impact through designing and building media and public relations strategies to effectively tell the story of NYRR’s mission. The VP should be a collaborative executive, able to work seamlessly and positively with fellow senior leadership team members.

Job Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership

  • Lead the development of strategy and direction of key organizational messages; build and foster critical relationships with outlets and media to maximize message visibility
  • Oversee news cycles; guide and communicate strategic direction to partners and senior management
  • Plan and prioritize all staff resources working across project(s)
  • Liaison internally with other departments and externally with key media outlets, city agencies, other partners and local communities to ensure successful communication of NYRR messages

Team Leadership

  • Lead a team spread across Broadcast, Media, and Public Relations
  • Build and empower world-class Communication leaders
  • Work closely with key internal stakeholders to develop and execute dynamic campaigns that drive growth for their target products, programs and offerings
  • Develop strong, trusting relationships across the senior leadership team, providing leadership in public relations strategy, ideation, and execution
  • Determine what external agencies to work with to complement the existing team, and drive growth
  • Develop and refine department operating policies and procedures
  • Communicate effectively with the CEO on all planning, directional and executional details and results

Job Requirements:

Experience:

  • 15+ years of Media / Public Relations experience
  • 3+ years of experience on an Executive / Senior leadership team
  • Experience in corporate communications, including financial and crisis communications
  • Experience developing strategic plans and knowledge of the plans are guided by audience insights and behaviors
  • Excellent writing, speaking and editing skills with a proven ability to craft compelling narratives
  • Achievement as a manager, leader, and coach/mentor with success in hiring and fostering growth of high-performing teams
  • Unwavering ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment
  • Efficiently manage multiple projects, while meeting tight deadlines, establishing clear priorities, and maintaining a high level of professionalism and attention to detail
  • Proven experience forecasting and managing budgets
  • Proficiency in communication measurement and reporting, with an ability to tie KPIs to business impact
  • Ability to influence cross-functionally across all levels of management
  • A network of relevant industry contacts; proven ability to build relationships and drive coverage with top-tier media Understanding, appreciation, and personal experience from running, running audiences and contemporary culture
  • Knowledge of NY City and State governance

Education:

  • Bachelors degree in a related field preferred

Salary Range $170,000 – $185,000/year

NYRR requires all employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19 unless approved for a medical or religious exemption.
