Vision Program Technician

General Description
Under the supervision of the Assistive Technology/Vision Specialist, assists and supports department staff with interpreting and transliterating both to and from Braille, equipment inventory, equipment maintenance, material preparation and fabrication, troubleshooting assistive devices/adaptive equipment, and various clerical work.
Essential Job Functions

  • Adapts and produces classroom materials, tests, etc. into Braille under the direction of the teacher of the blind/visually impaired (TBVI).
  • Maintains instructional materials and supplies, makes necessary repairs and adjustments as needed.
  • Maintains student records and teacher files as directed in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Enlarges, adapts educational materials, constructs tactual materials and produces auditory formats, per instruction of the teacher of the blind/visually impaired.
  • Troubleshoots problems with devices/equipment and/or provides alternative equipment/materials as needed/requested by teachers.
  • May provide direct assistance to students as requested by department coordinator, specialist and/or teachers.
  • Ensures department protocols are followed when ordering materials, placing work orders, troubleshooting assistive devices/equipment, transporting items, etc.
  • Orders accessible instructional materials, maintains inventory and records of equipment and resources and delivers materials to schools.
  • Assists teachers in keeping lists of vendors and materials, obtaining cost quotations and preparing purchase requisitions.
  • Performs routine clerical tasks as assigned; operates copy machines; assembles materials for classroom projects; files classroom, student, instructional and program materials; and types frequently.
  • Maintains and monitors inventory of equipment, materials, and supplies.
  • Works with audio-visual equipment, computers and/or assistive technology as related to IEP/accommodations & modifications.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

The employee is required to stand, walk, sit and may be required to lift up to fifty pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance, and peripheral vision. Employee must have a valid driver’s license and a vehicle available for business use.

Work Environment :

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a school or office environment. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.

Qualifications

Some knowledge of the impact of visual impairment, braille, nemeth, sighted guide, and clerical procedures. Working skill in braille transcription and interpretation and in the use of a personal computer, utilizing word processing and spreadsheet software (Excel, Word preferred). Demonstrated ability to perform basic clerical tasks, to communicate orally and in writing and to follow oral and written instructions. Demonstrated ability to work well with students, staff, community agencies, and parents in a professional manner.

Requirements

Education, training or experience sufficient to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must hold a valid Virginia Driver’s license.
