Position Description

The (ARTS) manages the city’s public art program, cultural partnerships grant programs, ARTS at King Street Station, the Langston Hughes Performing Arts Institute, and The Creative Advantage initiative in the effort to foster a city driven by creativity that provides the opportunity for everyone to engage in diverse arts and cultural experiences. In alignment with the City’s Race and Social Justice Initiative, we work to eliminate institutional racism in our programs, policies, and practices.

ARTS opened an art gallery on the 3rd floor of King Street Station in the fall of 2018. The space was created with the goal of realizing tangible impacts for race and social justice, specifically by increasing opportunities for communities of color to present their work. The ARTS’ Gallery at King Street Station (KSS), which incorporates a 7,500-square-foot gallery space, a studio for artists-in-residence, and offices for the staff of the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture, was conceived to increase opportunities for people of color to generate and present their work.

The Office of Arts and Culture is seeking a part-time Visitor Services Coordinator who will provide front-desk staffing for the King Street Station Gallery as well as administrative and facilities support for the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture.

The ARTs commitment to racial equity is applied to all work within the office and staff are expected to make decisions and operate through and with that lens.

This position reports to the KSS Program Lead and will work closely with other ARTs staff members and the Gallery visitors.

Job Responsibilities

Here is more of the work you will be doing:

Reception and Community Engagement:

  • Greeting, providing information to King Street Station visitors and monitoring gallery.
  • Answering main phone line and routing calls to ARTS staff.
  • Managing incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Collecting and analyzing gallery data related to attendance and other relevant metrics.
  • Serving as a community liaison, providing current, accurate, and relevant information to visitors.

Art Gallery and Event Coordination:

  • Assisting with special event set up and break down for ARTS’ gallery space.
  • Scheduling art installation planning with the KSS Gallery Lead and other ARTS staff.
  • Assisting with poster and postcard creation for upcoming shows.

Providing administrative, office support as needed including:

  • Data entry.
  • Information review.
  • Filing and archiving historical documents.
  • Ordering, filing, and organizing office supplies.
  • Other related duties as required.

You will be prepared for this role if you have the following:

  • Experience working in a customer service environment with a commitment to providing excellent customer service.
  • Ability to communicate respectfully and clearly.
  • Intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and Google Suite.
  • Customer service background and ability to address customer needs over both phone and e-mail.
  • Independent work ethic and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and react to sudden changes.
  • Work effectively with colleagues and partners from the full range of differences reflected in our community, including but not limited to: ableness/disability, age, economic/social class, English proficiency, ethnicity, family status, gender identity and expression, national origin/citizenship status, race, religion/spiritual expression, and sexual orientation.

Qualifications

In addition to the ability to perform the tasks described above, you will need to possess the below required qualifications:

Two years of clerical support experience

OR

a combination of education, training and/or experience which provides evidence of the ability to perform work of the class.

Additional Information

This part-time (0.5 FTE) regular position with full benefits is classified as an Administrative Specialist 2. This is a Civil Service position eligible for overtime. The full pay range for this step-progression position is $28.00 – $31.35 hourly. New employees begin at Step 1 of the pay progression, which is $28.00 hourly. Current City employees’ starting rate of pay will be based on Personnel Rules regarding promotions.

This position is an onsite position and employees are expected to work in person 5 days a week. Individual schedules will be based on agreement between the employee and their supervisor.

Applicants must successfully pass a background check, which will be conducted in accordance with Seattle’s Fair Chance Employment Ordinance, SMC 14.17. Applicants will be given a chance to explain or correct background information and provide verifiable information of good conduct and rehabilitation.

Individuals selected to fill this position may be eligible to receive Language Premium Pay (SMC 4.20.360), which provides a $200.00 monthly stipend to qualified bilingual employees who are properly evaluated and assigned to provide direct communication in-language, interpretation, or translation services to the public on behalf of the City of Seattle.
