Visual Communications Specialist

We’re currently searching for a Visual Communications Specialist to join our Student Affairs Communications team in Blacksburg, VA to help us in our mission. So, if you’re passionate about creatively telling the student story, please keep reading.

Here’s what you need to know about the role:
• You’ll be joining the Student Affairs Communications team; a department of creative professionals who enjoy enhancing the student experience through various marketing and communication mediums.
• You’ll be reporting to the Visual Communications Manager for Student Affairs Communications in a regular twelve-month, staff appointment with a flexible work arrangement schedule.
• You’ll work collaboratively with the communications team and Student Affairs departments to produce photographs and videos of people, events, meetings, and other subjects as needed to fulfill the division’s visual messaging needs.
• You’ll develop concepts and identify locations and subjects to create images for use across a variety of communications platforms including web, print, digital publications, podcasts, and social media.
• You’ll coordinate, scout, and schedule photo and video shoots and manage multiple photography/video projects simultaneously while adhering to deadlines and managing divisional partners’ expectations in order to deliver effective creative assets.
• You’ll develop your creative skills in a multitude of platforms, which will enhance the overall quality of our division’s images and messages.
• You’ll be offered a base compensation package between $40,000-$45,000, along with a comprehensive benefits package that includes health insurance, paid leave, retirement, tuition assistance, VT discounts, and so much more!

Required Qualifications
• Demonstrated knowledge of digital photography and videography, including professional-level techniques and standards.
• Demonstrated skill in the operation of cameras, lenses, lighting, audio, and other photographic and video equipment.
• Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite, including Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, and Lightroom.
• Demonstrated talent for visual communication.
• Social media savvy and experience producing content for popular social media channels, including Tiktok, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.
• Professionalism and strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to use them with a diverse group of people in a friendly and courteous manner.
• Time management skills, flexibility, and ability to work independently, prioritizing work assignments with strong follow through to meet department and clients’ deadlines.
• Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy.
• Must demonstrate attention to detail and the ability to work on multiple projects at once.
• Link to existing portfolio required.

Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in film and photography, visual communications or similar and/or equivalent training and work experience
• Previous experience producing social media content for business, nonprofits, or higher education institutions.
• Experience with project management systems.
• Experience using After Effects.
• Experience creating, using, and following a style guide.
• Demonstrated knowledge of shooting and editing photo and video using DSLR cameras.
• Previous experience maintaining photo and video equipment.
