Pay Range
- $104,370 – $129,588 Annual (G02.3)
- $125,160 – $155,400 Annual (G02.4)
Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
Job Description
We have an opening for a Web and Graphics Designer to support the Executive Communications group in the Office of Strategic Communications (OSC). You will assist with OSC initiatives working closely with senior leaders in LLNL’s Director’s Office (DO) on integrated communication strategies and deliverables for key institutional priorities. Your work will be performed in collaboration with colleagues in the OSC, the DO and throughout LLNL.
The selected candidate will be an exceptionally talented designer with complete understanding of design processes to create a broad range of communication products in different media. You will be able to communicate with executives confidently and succinctly. Assignments will require your ability to create complex visuals, illustrations and graphics, publications, web designs, dynamic presentations, environmental and small format designs for technical and non-technical audiences. This position will be in the Technical Information Department matrixed to the Office of Strategic Communication.
The position will be filled at either the GO2.3 or GO2.4 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
In this role you will:
- Collaborate and interact with all levels of administrative, management, scientific and technical staff and team members to understand, define, develop and establish objectives to form design requirements for complex projects.
- Visually translate complex ideas into clear, accurate, relevant and compelling products appropriate to target audiences with an emphasis on impact and effectiveness.
- Apply unique approaches to create designs using a variety of software/tools for print, web, multimedia and presentations exceeding standards for quality and adhering to style/brand and accessibility guidelines.
- Plan, guide and coordinate production decisions in print, web, multimedia and presentation projects; oversee projects from concept through completion; coordinate work with other team members and choose appropriate work methods. Contribute to the evaluation and implementation of tools, technologies and processes as they apply to design; assist with process improvement methods; recommend appropriate styles; test design products on different platforms using appropriate software/tools.
- Assist with establishing creative direction for visual communication through research, testing and presenting methods for management consideration. Provide design consultation.
- Evaluate project progress and results; recommend and implement significant changes to achieve overall objectives.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In addition, at the .4 level
- Lead, manage and oversee institutional-level design concepts, graphics, multimedia and content strategy to represent the science and technology at LLNL; provide analysis of the successful completion of those projects based on quality, timeline and budget. Evaluate progress of multiple concurrent projects; guide the work of others.
- Provide in-depth consultation and feedback related to the development of highly sensitive and complex projects that include design components.
- Establish standards for work quality and provide creative direction on techniques, processes, cost-effective alternatives to producing a variety of products. Serve as final review assuring quality.
Qualifications
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor’s degree in graphic design or related field, or equivalent combination of education and significant related experience.
- Ability to conceptualize and effectively design, plan, direct, and coordinate production of multimedia design projects, including experience in establishing and maintaining design integrity throughout all media, publications and campaigns.
- Advanced knowledge of and experience with design methods and software programs, including Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, XD) for print and digital production.
- Knowledgeable of and experience designing for web and advanced understanding of emerging design technologies, accessibility standards and inclusive design.
- Effective interpersonal skills and ability to work within a team in a demanding environment.
- Ability to handle classified, unclassified, sensitive and confidential issues with tact, diplomacy and discretion.
- Problem solving and decision-making skills necessary to independently recommend appropriate actions and solutions.
- Experience leading complex print and multimedia design projects and establishing commitments of cost, schedule, and quality. Ability to balance creative expertise with stakeholder objectives and requirements.
- Experience working as a peer and consultant with technical contributors and management.
- Demonstrated self-starter, comfortable multitasking with ability to work to deadlines and respond to tight schedules in a rapidly changing environment and attend to intense details with high consequence of error.
In addition, at the .4 level
- Significant experience with pre-production/production/post-production processes in digital, multimedia and print communications.
- In-depth technical knowledge of UI/UX design for web and development in a content management system, such as WordPress, Drupal, and Liferay. Experience applying UX principles to web front-end design, with an understanding of HTML, CSS, Bootstrap.
- Experience managing visual identity guidelines and ensuring consistent use and implementation across an organization.
- Experience mentoring other designers on understanding and implementing brand guidelines.
Qualifications we desire
- Ability to understand and translate advanced or complicated scientific processes into easy-to-understand visual designs.
- Experience in photography and/or video editing.
- Understanding of LLNL’s mission of enabling U.S. security and global stability and resilience by empowering multidisciplinary teams to pursue bold and innovative science and technology.

Security Clearance
This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.
