Summary:
The Welder Lead supervises and manages a variety of personnel and projects by collectively performing complex and precision welding techniques supporting repairs, maintenance, and fabrication of various structures. The Lead interprets blueprints, specifications, diagrams, or schematics to determine appropriate welding process(es). The Lead will also inspect all completed welds to ensure they meet a specified standard. They perform the duties of a welder and the administrative duties of department operations as follows:
Key Responsibilities:
- Directs subordinate welders in their tasks and duties on a project.
- Must be self-motivated, able to lead teams effectively and successfully, and willing to lead by example.
- Provides daily “toolbox” briefings to the work force.
- Meets project schedules by effectively managing time, material, and manpower.
- Performs related tasks such as torch cutting, plasma cutting, grinding, fitting, welding, and layout.
- Must have knowledge and experience with proper rigging procedures.
- Subject Matter Expert of common parts, materials, fittings, and associated equipment.
- Must be able to order common and consumable parts and materials as needed for projects.
- Must be proficient in the use of bandsaws, grinders, needle guns, and basic mechanical skills.
- Ensures the safe and efficient operation of their projects. Complies with and enforces all safety requirements and maintains a clean and orderly work site.
- Must be able to troubleshoot complex welding situations.
- Performs other similar or related duties as requested or assigned.
- Requires ability to respond quickly to priority changes and work well under pressure due to scheduling constraints and perform quality work in a safe and efficient manner.
- Must have reliable transportation.
- Must have a reliable record of attendance and punctuality and be available for overtime as required. Job will require working weekends during peak seasons.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Acquires knowledge of Trident’s Environmental and Safety Policies by completing required training programs and performing designated work activities in accordance with training and procedures/work instructions.
- Notifies designated personnel of any environmental or safety incidents or risks not previously documented, in accordance with Environmental Awareness and/or safety training.
- Maintains a positive work atmosphere by acting and communicating in a manner so that you get along with customers, clients, co-workers, and management.
Minimum Requirements
Minimum Qualifications:
- 7+ years of welding supporting ship building, ship repairs, or ship fabrication required.
- Experience managing time and materials and supervising the work of others while meeting budget and schedule constraints.
- Must be able to pass Trident’s 3G / 4G / 6G Weld test at start of employment.
- Must be able to pass the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) welding certification testing within 90 days of employment.
- Must be able to pass Shipyard Competent Person (SCP) certification within 90 days of employment.
- Must be able to become CPR/AED trained and certified within 90 days of employment.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, and Excel).
- Demonstration of welding aluminum, stainless steel, and pipe.
Preferred Qualifications:
- High School diploma/GED, Associate Degree or skilled trades graduate preferred for more experienced positions, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Stainless steel, food grade fabrication, and vessel repair experience are desirable.
- Knowledge of ABS/DNV welding requirements is a highly preferred
Special Training/Skills:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations to supervisor and other employees of the organization. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and moving mechanical parts. The employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb or balance. The employee is occasionally required to sit; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear. The employee must regularly lift and /or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
Mental Activities:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to understand English, and utilize teamwork skills. The employee is frequently required to speak English, and use decision making skills. The employee is occasionally required to use interpersonal, customer service, mentoring, problem analysis, training and supervision skills. The employee will be occasionally required to read and write English, perform basic math, use exercise independent judgment, and use discretion.
This is an Hourly – Non-Exempt position with an hourly rate range of: $35 /hr The starting wage for this position is $35/hr.
