WIC Registered Nurse – Health

Department: Health Dept.

Pay: $48,399.00 annually | This position may be eligible for a sign on bonus of $2,500 after 60 days of employment if selected applicant meets all policy conditions.

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm, one night per week until 6:30 by staff rotation

This is a professional staff position providing direct services to participants in the WIC program. The nurses provide nutrition education, community referrals, breastfeeding education and support. They are responsible for determining the client’s program eligibility based on nutritional/medical risk and assignment of the appropriate supplemental food package for qualifying women, infants and children.

Assessment:

  • Assign nutrition risk for client eligibility.
  • Determine frequency and type of client follow-up appointments.
  • Use goal setting and stage of change principles to assess client’s state of behavioral change.
  • Provide nutritional counseling to clients and families.
  • Accurately collect client’s medical data.

Provides Education:

  • Use motivational counseling methods.
  • Make appropriate community and medical referrals.
  • Accurately read immunization records.
  • Provide community outreach.
  • Provide breastfeeding education, promotion, and support.
  • Prescribe appropriate WIC food package.

Manage Record Keeping:

  • Authorize and coordinate special formula issuance.
  • Schedule future WIC appointments appropriately for program requirements.
  • Complete documentation in the program software timely and thoroughly.
  • Meet program productivity standards.
  • Report success stories.

Minimum Qualifications: Associates degree in nursing. Must maintain a Registered Nurse license in the State of Kansas.

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in nursing. Two years of experience in women’s health and pediatrics. Bilingual and interpreter -able to pass medical fluency and/or medical interpreter testing.
