This is specialist work in the City’s fitness center.
An employee in this class develops, supervises, and instructs a winter recreation program in a fitness center. The season for employees in this class in the Recreation and Parks division begins November 1 and ends May 1 each year. The season for employees in this class in the Downtown Operations Division begins October 1 and ends April 1 each year.
Works under the supervision of a Recreation Supervisor or independently under general supervision.
Characteristic Work
Develops, supervises and instructs activities for persons engaged in recreation programs, including but not limited to: Sports, Special Events, Golf, Senior, Fitness Center, Weight Training and other recreation activities. Ensures programs are conducted in an orderly fashion; maintains staff and participant safety. Ensures appropriate conduct from participants. Greets participants and visitors and distributes accurate information regarding all activities and sites. Maintains open and positive communication with participants and visitors. Responds to public inquires about recreation programs made by telephone, correspondence, or during public meetings. Provides information regarding recreation programs to school officials, other recreation officials, community service groups, other city departments and the general public. Prepares a variety of brochures, calendars, letters, posters, news releases, and flyers. Coordinates, schedules and maintains related records and statistics for programs. Collects fees associated with programs. Assists in recruiting, organizing, and coordinating volunteer staff. Plans and participates in publicizing programs and in stimulating participation. Assists in coordinating, scheduling, and supervising City and Community Learning Center recreation facilities; ensures proper use of facilities by recreation groups. Required to work some evening and weekend hours, tournaments, evening leagues, special events, skill or other major recreation or City sponsored events. Applies first aid. Conducts safety and maintenance checks of assigned location. May assist with food and beverage preparation. Sets up tables, booths and equipment for events. Performs a variety of miscellaneous clerical duties such as answering phones, typing correspondence, and assisting other City divisions as needed. Drives a City vehicle to pick up supplies and run errands. Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of one year of formal participation or instructional experience in a fitness center or fitness activities. The examination will consist of an evaluation of the applicant’s experience in the specialty area and his/her general recreation background.
Ability to develop, coordinate, and direct varied activities involved in assigned community recreation program. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, other agencies, participants, instructors, community leaders, and the general public. Ability to perform basic mathematical computations. Ability to lift items weighing up to 30 pounds. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades.
VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to his/her passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.
