Description
Are you an experienced woodworker with a passion for sharing your skills and knowledge with others? If so, join the Arts Education team at the Cary Arts Center as a Woodworking Instructor. This role will teach teens and adults the art of working with wood, ensuring safe practices and providing guidance and support for all students. The Woodworking Instructor will teach structured classes and assist with managing open wood studios.
This is a part-time, non-benefited, year-round position, up to 20 hours per week with a maximum of 999 hours per year.
Class and camp dates and times vary throughout the year. Must be available on weekdays, evenings, and/or weekends.
Typical Tasks
Teaches and enforces all safety guidelines, processes, and procedures for the construction lab;
Provides instruction for woodworking, including use of hand and power tools;
Checks construction lab for any safety needs and informs supervisor;
Engages students in active clean-up of tools and space and provides direction for organization after each class or studio;
Manages the open wood studio as needed to enforce safety procedures and help users with tools and projects;
Provides needed supply lists for purchase by requested deadlines;
Performs additional job-related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of all safety procedures and regulations required in a woodworking lab; knowledge of proper and safe equipment use and maintenance; including cleaning processes; knowledge of a wide variety of wood and woodworking materials; knowledge of first aid; knowledge of design concepts; skilled in use of hand and power tools; skilled in effective communication; skilled in problem-solving; ability to successfully communicate verbally and in writing; ability to follow verbal and written direction; ability to teach; ability to stand for extended length of time; ability to lift up to 40 lbs.
Minimum and Preferred Qualifications
Requires at least two years of woodworking experience.
Prefers at least one year of teaching experience.
Prefers lathe experience.
