Provides Work Incentive Counseling to NMDVR participants on Social Security Disability Benefits seeking work or working for five New Mexico counties. The purpose of the job is too remove fear of work on Social Security Disability, while helping individuals move to financial security.

How does it get done?

Graduate and retain professional certificate on Social Security Disability Insurance and Supplemental Security Income work incentives, including Ticket to work. Educate on other public benefits affected by employment. Demonstrate the ability to work with people with disabilities including youth 14+. Develop and implement a process for the collection and verification of information from a number of public benefits, especially from Social Security Administration, but including Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, Medicaid, Medicare, Veterans Administration, Housing Authority, and Temporary Aid to Needy Families. Analysis information to find missing information and develop a plan on how to obtain the information needed. Research and interpret complicated rules, regulations, and laws from a number of sources and documentation. Review and summarize the gathered information, projecting possible financial outcomes with different levels of earnings. Communicate verbally to the participant and their support team on the participants current benefits situation and the affect of earnings. Provide guidance and counseling at different key events. Produce comprehensive written assessment and written plan. Train participant on how to report income to all public benefits and how to complete SSA forms. Protect Secure Social Security provided data as well as obtaining a Social Security suitability clearance following both state and local laws. Promote economic financial stability. Complete database and paperwork by deadline. Work in a multidisciplinary and fluid team as needed.

Who are the customers?

Active participants of New Mexico Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and on Social Security Disability Benefits aged 14 to full retirement age.

Ideal Candidate

Spanish speaking, Valid Community Work Incentive Counselor (CWIC) certificate.
Knowledge of the Social Security Administration’s work incentives.
Knowledge of Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, Medicaid, and Medicare.

Minimum Qualification

Associate’s degree in Social Sciences or Human Services and two (2) years of experience as a social worker or community coordinator and/or social worker assistant. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

Must possess a valid Driver’s License. Pre-employment criminal background check is required and conditional pending results. Ability to travel to rural areas using state vehicle.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Arranging travel and travel to other offices or locations using state car.
