New Bethlehem Programs provides emergency services for families experiencing homelessness on the Eastside. NBP has 3 program sites including New Bethlehem Place, of Kirkland Place for Families and women, New Bethlehem Day Center, and an Extended Shelter in Hotel Program. These programs together provide 24/7 shelter and day services, including hygiene services, case management, mental health support, and other services aimed toward permanent housing and stability.
Position Description
The Youth Services Coordinator will work with youth and families at all 3 of NBP’s locations. They will provide oversight and organization to all youth activities and education programming. This programming will include weekly play and recreation activities, education case management and relationship building with local schools and school district liaisons, and parenting support. The YSC will work with NBP volunteers, school district liaisons and teacher, the NBP leadership team, and CCS CREW providers, who will partner with YSC in providing these services. The YSC’s primary role will be the organization and structuring of these relationships and resources for a more robust, organized, inclusive, and fulfilling youth programming offerings within New Bethlehem Programs.
The Covid-19 pandemic led to the need for more intentional programming in support of our youth’s well being, educational success, and mental health. The Youth services coordinator will operate with compassion and skill to provide programming that supports NBP children so that they have mentors, partners, and community to accompany in these tough times. Our ideal candidate is someone who values educational intentional youth programming as a vehicle for change, and who has a deep understanding of Equity, Diversion, and Inclusion, and aims to provide youth programming that meets youth where they are at. We seek an individual who has experience educating youth who have faced barriers to academic success and can apply these skills to being an educational coordinator, advocate and shelter leader. Valued skills include curriculum differentiation and classroom management, youth activities coordination, leadership, and working with large teams and networks. We are looking for someone who is a fantastic multi-tasker, who can comfortably manage the main components of this position. We also seek someone who will work well with others, and will be comfortable working with partners such as volunteers, schools, school districts, and other program staff.
Responsibilities
- Supervise, facilitate, and coordinate Youth activities program at New Bethlehem Programs. In collaboration with parents and other program staff, as well as prospective schools and teachers, develop recreation activities like crafts, games and science experiments, as well as learning activities and homework support.
- Foster an environment where youth and adults are treated with respect and care,and where learning is perceived to be fun, exciting and important.
- Train and supervise NBP volunteer tutors, in collaboration with the Volunteer Coordinator, who will provide extra support and guidance for educational needs. Provide ongoing support, feedback and guidance for center volunteers. Guide volunteers to strengthen their relationships with students, and provide them with both academic and pedagogical support as needed.
- Collaborate with other community service providers to increase responsivenessto community needs. Actively participate and represent NBP in community educational meetings and committees.
- Work collaboratively with parents and teachers to create a support system that enables academic success for each student. Build and strengthen partnerships with parents, schools and community groups through visits, phone calls and written materials. Use input from parents and teachers to customize the learning supports to best meet the needs of each student.
- Complete administrative work necessary for the on-going operation of the shelter and day center programs including daily attendance, and monthly narrative and statistical reports.
- Work directly with youth; lead small-group tutoring and homework help as needed. Develop and implement program activities for different services such as literacy enrichment, academic skill building activities, higher education preparation and job preparedness.
- When capacity permits, facilitate teen mentoring, volunteerism, and/or internships for teen residents, who are preparing for graduation.
- During summer months, work with volunteers to develop summer programming and activities that incorporates outdoor spaces, and help work with community partners to direct youth to programming in Kirkland area such as at the Peter Kirk Community Center and the Boys and girls Club
- Work with CCS’ CREW (Counseling Recovery and Wellness) program to direct parents to parenting support groups and partner with the Kirkland Place MHP to create lesson plans for this group based on needs parents express.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent number of years experience may substitute for education.
- Three (3) years relevant classroom/group teaching experience, or after-school program leadership experience (grades 1-12 or equivalent) or equivalent experience.
- Cultural competence in working with diverse students.
- Experience working with struggling students.
- Detailed oriented: demonstrated strong organizational and administrative skills.
- Proven ability to work independently and supervise and coach staff or volunteers.
- Strong classroom management skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with schools, students, parents, community representatives and the general public.
- Willingness to learn and work well within a team environment.
- Ability to support and uphold the mission, beliefs and values of Catholic Community Services and Catholic Housing Services and a knowledge of and commitment to working within the Social Teaching of the Catholic Church.
- WA State Driver’s License and on-going use of a vehicle.
- Evening availability until 8pm Monday through Thursday.
- Updated CPR and First Aid certification

Preferred Qualifications
- Teaching Certification or Master’s Degree in Education or a related field.
- Experience and/or training working with English language learners and students with learning challenges.
- Experience with curriculum at multiple grade levels and curriculum differentiation.
