Zoo Lead Veterinary Technician
Full-time, Hourly
Hourly Range: $22.33 – $25.01/hr

Job Summary:Assist in Zoo hospital management. Assist veterinarians with clinical duties; perform laboratory sample analyses; evaluate inventory, purchase lab and medical products; schedule veterinary procedures with other animal subdivisions; manage carcass disposition; implement saftey procedures; perform quality control monitoring of equipment; coordinate hospital maintenance; and implement radiation exposure control program.
Job Responsibilities:
- Clinical Duties – Assist veterinarians with routine, diagnostic, emergency medical and surgical procedures. Perform anesthesia and assigned veterinary procedures with limited veterinary supervision. Clean and sterilize medical equipment. Provide nursing care to animals, transport animals, restrain animals, handle controlled and hazardous substances.
- Operational Oversight & Facilities Management – Coordinates schedule and daily duties of veterinary technicians ensuring high standards of animal care, health and safety, quality control, and respectful workplace behavior. Provide team members with training and coaching to maximize opportunity for success. Develop and implement hospital protocols and SOP’s (Standard Operating Procedures). Manage biohazard waste. Oversee inventory and order lab, medical and pharmaceutical supplies. Coordinate equipment repair and hospital maintenance. Manage carcass disposition and tracking.
- Laboratory Duties – Collect lab specimens safely from a wide variety of zoo animals. Prepare specimens and perform laboratory analysis and sample processing (e.g. fecal analysis, hematology, serum chemistry, urinalysis, cytology), and distributing samples to specialized laboratories. Maintain local sample storage system. Computer entry of laboratory results.
- Quality Control – Perform routine quality control testing on various medical equipment including monitoring and testing oxygen system for leaks and testing anesthesia machine for leaks. Make repairs if possible. Monitor liquid nitrogen level of semen storage tanks. Purge outdated drugs monthly.
- Administration & Records – Report and maintain daily records (e.g. lab results, treatments, medications, animal health status) for quality control and preservation in the Zoo Information Management System (ZIMS). Complete and maintain copies of work orders and other records regarding the operation and use of the animal area facilities.
- Professional Collaboration – Establish positive rapport within mission-parallel professional organizations, participate in associated conferences and training opportunities. Collaborate with other zoos, researchers, and wildlife organizations to advance the zoo’s mission and animal programs. Participate in program leadership as practicable.
- Public Engagement – Proactively engage with volunteers and visitors to enhance their experience. Conduct formal and informal public presentations on subjects such as: animal health, veterinary care, conservation and research. Assist in the training of educators, tour guides and volunteers. Maintain positive and collaborative relationships with maintenance, grounds, creative, and all other zoo departments.
- Ability to safely and properly operate: various types of vehicles, box trucks with lifts, microscopes, general office equipment, hand tools, laboratory equipment, and medical/surgical equipment.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.; push and pull up to 25 lbs.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Education, License/Certification and Experience:
- Current resident of Wisconsin
- Valid WI Driver’s license required and must be maintained throughout employment
- Associates Degree or higher required
- Two (2) years or more work experience as a veterinary technician, including diagnostic testing in a Zoo enviornment required.
- Intermediate or Advanced knowledge of all related computer and software applications (e.g. word processing and spreadsheets) required
- Previous experience with Zoological Information Management Systems (ZIMS) preferred
Certifications/License Required:
- Veterinary Technician certification required
